Edwin Woodman Leonard was born on 23 November 1883 in London, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. He died on 9 April 1917 at age 33 in Lapugnoy, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
Edwin Woodford Leonard was born Novenber 23, 1883 and was the son of Frank Elton Leonard and his second wife Alice Louise Ibbotson. Woodman attended Upper Canada College and Royal Military College. He rose to Major in an artillery unit in the Canadian militia following graduation, and was also made partner in the family foundry business in 1910. In 1914, Woodman was called to train at Valcartier Camp, Quebec in preparation for the first Canadian Contingent’s entry into World War I. As a Major in the12th Battery of the 3rd Artillery Brigade of the 1st Canadian Division, he sailed from Canada aboard the troop ship Montezuma and arrived at Devonport Harbour on October 14, 1914.The 1st Canadian Division left England early in 1915. Woodman’s correspondence home indicates that he was heavily involved in the 2nd Battle of Ypres (April, 1915). He was promoted to Lt. Colonel in 1916 and was, on June 22 of that year, given command of June of the 3rd Canadian Artillery Brigade, 1st Canadian Division. Woodman and his brother Ibbotson’s diaries and letters record that Woodman and the 3rd brigade were present at virtually every major action Canadian troops were involved in during 1915 and 1916. At the battle of Vimy Ridge, on April 9th 1917, Woodman was struck by shrapnel in his left shoulder and was paralyzed below the waist, dying that same day. Woodman Leonard is buried in section II, row D, plot 14 of Lapugnoy Military Cemetery near Bethune, France.Lt. Col. Woodman Leonard was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his wartime service to Canada. Edwin Woodman Leonard died wounds from battle at Vimy Ridge on 10 April 1917 at age 33 in France.
