Biography

Mary Rinkard was born in 1781 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Valentine Leonard and she were married in 1806 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

When Valeniine died at age 34, Mary loaded her 9 children and all their worldly possessions in covered wagsons and headed for southwest Ohio, settling firs in Montgomery County. They stayed there 7 years and next moved to Williams Co., OH, in 1833. They followed Indian and buffalo trails along ridges, around marshes, across fords in rivers, and after trying experiences arrived at the cabin of Frederick Miser, who was to become a neighbor. They lived in their covered wagons, with a lean-to built to these covered with tree boughts and skins auntil their new cabins in the wilderness were completed.
