Nathaniel Chapman was born on 13 September 1746 in Tewksbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He and Lucy Cooley were married on 24 July 1780 in Longmeadow, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He died on 18 February 1807 at age 60 in Salem, Washington County, Ohio.

Nathaniel was a Minute Man at the Battle of Concord, served with Israel Putnam at Bunker Hill, and was with George Washington at Valley Forge. His service with the Continential Army was from 1777 until 1780, at which time he was honorable discharged at Springfield, having attained the rank of Captain early in the Colonial struggle. During this Revolutionary War, Nathaniel wife, Elizabeth Simonds, gave birth to their third child and died soon after on July 18, 1776. The baby died and their two children were cared for by relatives. After the war, Nathaniel married again and made his home in Longmeadow,Ma. with their ten children. In the late summer of 1805, the family moved to Marietta, Ohio. With Johnny Appleseed, his son, as a guide, father and sons set up Duck Creek. Leaving mother and girls with friends in the village. Johnny led them to a big fertile creek bottom about twenty-five miles up Duck Creek where they blazed a claim and built a large cabin. This is where Nathaniel and his wife Lucy settled and later died.

John Chapman's first wife was Elizabeth Symonds 1749-1775. They had three children, one of whom was John Chapman -- "Johnny Appleseed" -- born 28 Sep 1774 in Leominster, MA, died 18 Mar 1845 in Fort Wayne, IN.
