Mahala Thompson were married on 18 May 1851 in POttumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. He died in 1900 at age ~73 in Iowa.
Name sometimes spelled Herod. He was a farmer and stock raiser in Long Creek twp. He assisted his father on the farm until he was 19 years of age and in 1848 accompanied him to Iowa. He settled in Fairfield, Jefferson Co., where he remained 3 years, then removed to Wapello Co., and thence, in 1855, to Decatur County. He commenced with very little means, and when he was married he was $75 in debt. He rented land at first, and by hard work and good management, assisted by his excellent wife, he saved enough in four years to purchase a home. He is honest, energetic and hospitable. He has been a member of the School Board 15 years.
