Biography

John Briggs was born in 1609 in Darrington, Yorkshire, England. He and Sarah Cornell were married before 1642 in Newport or Portsmouth, Rhode Island.¹ He died in November 1690 at age ~81 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.

He came to America in 1635, first to Boston. He was driven from Boston with Ann Hutchison's party and settled in Newport where he was admitted as a freeman October 1, 1638.

Also known as Rogier Kandelaer. Also spelled Chandelaer. Roger and his family probably came to Plymouth in 1629 or 1630 when the rest of the contingent from Leyden arrived. He was a sayweaver.
