Russell Henry Leonard was born on 4 October 1888 in Somerset, Massachusetts. He and Helen Elizabeth Case were married on 19 September 1911 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He died on 5 November 1949 at age 61. He was buried at Mayflower Cemetery in Taunton, Massachusetts.

He was a successful businessman. He became President of Pepperill Mills and director of several corporations. He died at age 61 of a heart attack shortly after retiring from Pepperill Mills.

"That left Grampa L (Russell) an orphan at age 16, albeit a rich one. He drove his own Pierce Arrow sports car in college."

"Grampa L. was brought up by Biddie Kennedy, an old family retainer employed by the Leonards in Somerset. Biddie could read, but couldn't write. She was a loving, loyal soul who came to live with grampa and gramma Leonard when they were married in 1912 and stayed until she died.
