Christopher Slocum
M, #1189, b. before 1774, d. before 16 April 1825
Parents
Family: Sarah Ash (b. about 1766, d. 16 April 1825)
Biography
Christopher Slocum was born before 1774 in Nashawena or Naushon Island, Elizabeth Islands, Massachusetts. He and
Sarah Ash were married about 1790. He died before 16 April 1825.
The Slocum Genealogy lists Christopher as #758, his son Christopher as #759, and son Peter as #760. Information on Christopher's family and children is taken from The Slocum Genealogy (1880). Christopher's children are listed in Tisbury VR's to the Year 1850, p. 82.
Christopher Slocum was supposedly born on Naushon Island, one of the Elizabeth Islands. Amelia Forbes Emerson's book, Early History of Naushon Island, RIHS Collection, 1935, reprinted 1981, doesn't mention Christopher Slocum, but does mention John (his father) and Peleg.
Neither lists who the parents of Christopher were. #118 in the Slocum Genealogy, John Slocum, was living on Pasque Island at the end of Naushon during the 1770's. He married Robe Briggs (int. October 9, 1767, both of Dartmouth). He had English sympathies and entertained the British, but when he heard them plotting to raid Falmouth, he went to Falmouth by cover of night and warned the citizens (pp. 294-95 of the Forbes book). After that, he had to move to avoid retaliation by the British. A later record has him living in Chilmark, Dukes Co., husbandman, guilty of seditious speech, 1782 (L RRm 1779). He was about the right age, had children, and lived in the right area to be the father of Christopher, although Christopher is not listed among his children. Children: William b. Sept. 27, 1769...gap...Deborah b. Jan 27, 1776, Charles b. Jan. 9, 1779, John jr b. Oct. 6, 1780, Humphrey Ames b. Sept. 24, 1783, Rodney b. Oct. 24, 1785. He may have died by 1790; Rhobe Briggs is noted as marrying Marlborough Wood of Dartmouth that year. (Naushon and Nashawena appear to be different islands, per MA geography book) William Slocum of Nashawena captained the Harmony, which deceived the British warship Nimrod during the War of 1812, leaving the latter high and dry on the rocks off Round Hills (Dartmouth/New Bedford).
Another line to follow: A Charles Slocum was born on Nashewana Island January 2, 1779, died there September 11, 1850. He married (1) Mary (Polly) Devol Dec. 22, 1801, in Dartmouth, (2) Jane Haskin of Dartmouth August 7, 1810. He was listed as "of Chilmark" at the time of his wedding. His father was John Slocum, born in Dartmouth October 6, 1746, and married there Robey Briggs October 9, 1767. He resided both in Dartmouth and on Nashewana Island. He was the son of John Slocum, b. August 4, 1717, in Dartmouth, m. Deborah Almy, dau. John and Deborah Almy, December 25, 1738. Their children: Job b. Dec. 20, 1739, Elizabeth b. Feb.8, 1741/2, Eleazer b. #943 - Peabody Genealogy, 1909. Is this birth date correct -- 4 years before they were married? From whence came the name -- no Francis Wests in either of their backgrounds?
According to Peabody Genealogy, they had no children. I find them listed in the 1840 Census in Columbia, Bradford Co., PA, both ages 20-30, no children. They probably accompanied Thomas and Sarah to Columbia, Bradford Co., where Thomas is listed just above them in the Census record. Thomas and Sarah's daughter Sarah Ash Peabodie had married Bateman Monroe, who had gone to Columbia, Bradford Co., PA.
In the 1850 Census, Francis, a carpenter, and Susan are again living in Bristol. They appear to be living with Abigail Diman, 80, and Sarah Bliven(?), 38. Next door are James and Martha Diman, 52 and 51. James was a grocer. Abigail Munro Diman was the wife of Jeremiah Diman and sister of Abigail Diman Munro's father Henry. Francis was the step brother of Ann Peabodie who married John H. Leonard, son of Abraham B. Leonard and Abigail Diman Munro. John H. Leonard's sister, Phebe, was married to Fitz Herbert Peabody. Shortly after Francis died, Fitz and Phebe Peabody named their next son Francis West Peabody.
Francis died of a broken neck caused by a fall, according to RI death records and by Bennett Munro's notes. In 1850 Francis G. West was in Carpenter listed in 1850 RI Census.
