He was a wool merchant from Braintree, Essex, England.

Another source says they came over in 1638 on the "Susan and Ellen" July 17, 1638, sailing from London to Boston. (NEHGS, Hudson-Mohawk Family Memoirs, Vol. II, CD 157). He had a tract of 21 actres near the mouth of the Farmington River called the "Island, from the fact that the spring tides converted it temporarily to an island. He settled at Windsor late in 1639 and brought a wife, five sons, and three daughters.
