He was educated at Lowville Academy. He spent some years in West Cleveland, OH, and then Geneva, NY. He spent six years in Watertown, NY, and in June 1847 returned to Lowville where he had a dry goods store and engaged in the lumber trade. He was appointed postmaster of Lowville and later cashier of the Black River National Bank. In the 1860, he, his wife, two children, and mother-in-law were living in Lowville, NY.
