Parents

FatherThomas Munroe (b. 18 January 1765, d. 11 March 1836)
MotherSybil Borden (b. 3 October 1773, d. 9 November 1864)

Biography

Bateman Munroe was born on 25 June 1813 in Bristol, Rhode Island.1 He and Polly Westbrook were married on 31 July 1856. He died after 1880 in Pennsylvania.
In 1850 Census, he and wife Lois, age 24, were at Troy, Bradford Co., PA.

There's confusion between him and his cousin, Bateman Munroe. Both were in PA and in Columbia County. The Bateman b. 2 Mar 1815, married 4 times and died in 1900 in Sylvania, Bradford Co., NY, after having resided earlier in Sullivan, Tioga Co, PA. The cousin Bateman married Sarah Eastman Munro. This Bateman b. 25 Jun 1813 married 3 times and died in Sylvania, Bradford Co., date uncertain. It's easy to confuse the two in Census and other records.

Abigail ("Abby") Huddy was born about 1762 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. Jeremiah Pabody and she were married ABT 1780–1784 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. She died in 1842 at age ~80 in Bristol or Newport.
After two decades of searching, I haven't found definitive proof of which Huddy married married Jeremiah Pabody. This is my best guess.

A Thomas Huddy, over 45, and his wife, over 45, no children at home, listed in 1800 Census for Newport. In the 1790 Census for Newport, what appears to be the same Thomas Huddy had 2 sons and 3 daughters at home. A Thomas Huddy died January 27, 1816, in Newport. One could hypothesize that Thomas Huddy Peabodie was named after this Thomas. Thomas was born in 1735, admitted a freeman in RI in May 1753, and died 5 April 1812. His wife was Mary Lawton. They had seven daughters and three sons. They are listed in the 1774 RI Census as Thomas Heddy in Newport, with 3 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 1 female over 16, 7 females under 16 in the household. I assume Abigail Huddy was one of these daughters -- one of the 7 females under 16 in 1774. Another member of this family could be Norton Huddy, perhaps a grandson, found in the 1820 Newport census as head of household with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 1 female over 16.

Second choice would be this one, but I can find no evidence to support her being married to anyone but Benjamin Fairbanks. An Abigail Huddy was born in 1763 in Bristol, RI, married a Benjamin Fairbanks b. abt. 1762 in Newport, d. September 8, 1842, married December 23, 1784, no children listed, Newport Mercury, 24 Feb 1900. He was living in Newport in the 1790 Census, no children, wife. Benjamin left all his estate to his wife, Abigail (will dtd. 8 Sep 1842)(Source: The Fairbanks Family in America, p. 128). An Abigail Fairbanks is listed as having died aft. 1850 in Newport. Abigail could have become the Abbie of John and Abbie Peabodie, parents of Thomas.

There was a Hunlick Huddy and family living in Newport in the 1820 Census, but the record can't be found. A Hunlock Huddy married Rebecca Norton December 27, 1727, in Newport (Trinity Church Records, Newport). Hunlick is a given name that seems to run almost exclusively in the Huddy family.

DaughterSarah Ann Peabody+ (b. about 1807, d. 18 December 1862)
SonCharles Peabodie (b. about 1820)

Biography

Charles Peabodie was born about 1785 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. He and Abigail Browning were married on 1 April 1806 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.1 He died after 1820 in Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island.
Charles Peabody was listed as "of Abby" when he married in 1806. Charles and Abby Browning were married by Darius Chase. Charles and Sarah had a daughter, Sarah A., according to Beaman, b. 1806 in Portsmouth. Also Arnold. Her death record has her parents' names as Charles and Sarah Peabodie.

There was a Charles Peabodie living in Bristol in the 1850 Census, age 30 (born in 1820). Son of Charles and Abby? Occupation listed in 1850 Census hard to read -- skinner?

The 1810 Census lists Charles Peabody of Bristol with a household of 2 males 16-25, 1 male 26-64 (Charles?), 1 female under 10 (Sarah A?), 2 females 16-25 (1 was Charles' wife Abigail). Educated guess: Charles and his wife, sons Charles and unknown, daughters Sarah and Abigail.

In 1850 Census, Charles the son living with Thomas and Eliza Reed, their son John F., 2, Abby Thompson, 50, and William Hutson, 30, seaman.

His wife, Abigail, died in Bristol, age 37, 8 October 1822. Apparently, they were living in Bristol, as was his brother Thomas. And his mother (?), Deborah, died in Bristol, aged 75, 12 Feb 1821, "formerly of Newport."

A Charles Anthony Peabody, tinsmith, was listed in the Warren city directory between 1874 and 1887. A Charles Anthony Peabody was born 5 May 1867 and died 1 Apr 1871.

A Charles Peabodie, b. abt. 1818, was working in a bobbin mill in Scituate at the time of the 1880 Census. Son?

A Rev. Charles Peabody performed a number of marriages in Barrington in the 1840's.

Biography

John Pabody was born on 14 March 1733 in Little Compton, Rhode Island. He and Mary Stoddard were married about 1758 in Little Compton, Newport County, Rhode Island. He died on 8 May 1812 at age 79 at Cemetery in Prudence Island, Rhode Island.
A John Pabody was admitted as a freeman of Massachusetts, May 1759. He is said to have resided in Providence in "Little Compton Families." But there were a number of John Peabodys/Pabodys/Pabodies in RI and MA at that time.

Peabody Genealogy, p. 440, and Little Compton Families, p. 440 state that John married Mary Stoddard, but Little Compton Families, p. 640, states that Mary Stoddard, daughter of Israel and Elizabeth Brownell Stoddard, born 30 July 1737 in Little Compton (RIVR, 4:6:171), married John Palmer, not John Pabodie. The intention of marriage of Mary Stoddar of Little Compton and John Palmer, Jr., of Dartmouth, was filed in Dartmouth November 7, 1767 (VR 2:479). This is according to Mayflower Families, Vol 16, Part 2, p. 279. The latter states that John Pabody/Peabody married before 25 October 1771 (when they signed a deed) Deborah ---, born about 1744, died at Bristol, as a widow, 3 February 1821, age 77, also 75, Deborah Peabody, late of this town (Bristol Deaths, 3:25, 4:168; Newport Mercury, 17 February 1821, 3; RIVR, 6:1:154), also of Newport. He was a weaver at the time he and Deborah signed the deed. He was named administrator of his father's estate 5 February 1767 in Little Compton. He and his mother, Rebecca, sold half a pew in the Congregational Meeting House on 13 March 1767.

RIVR is quite definite that Mary Stoddard married John Peabodie (Arnold, NEHGS Web Site).

John Paybody/Peabody is #615 in Mayflower Families, Vol. 16, Part 2, p. 279. That reference does not list Mary Stoddard as his wife, only Deborah, and lists Polly, William G., and Jeremiah as possible children. A footnote indicates that Mary Stoddard married John Palmer in 1767.

In the Richard Warren Family, Generation 5, John's father is listed as #414 (p. 111). There's mention of John the son: "On 5 Oct 1771, ack. 23 Oct 1772, John Pabody, weaver, of Little Compton, sold land to Capt. David Hillard. The deed was also signed by John's wife Deborah and mother Rebecca Pabody." On 5 Feb 1767 Rebeckah Pabody relinquished her right to administer the estate of John Pabody of Little Compton, yeoman, in favor of son John Pabody.

Did John first marry Mary Stoddard, that they parted some time before or after she bore a bastard child of John Palmer, and that John later married Deborah. Mary Stoddard of Little Compton delivered a male bastard child b. July 19, 1765 and said John Palmer Jr. of Little Compton was the father (Nov 1765 Court Record). She married John Palmer in 1767 (int. November 7, 1767 in Dartmouth). Note that she did not marry John immediately after having the child.

John Pabody's death 8 May 1812 at age 77 on Prudence Island, town of Portsmouth, RI, is noted in Elder Wight's Deaths. Death is said to have been registered in Providence in Peabody Genealogy. Rhode Island deaths lists John Peabody with 8 May 1812, 77 years, kin 1 Providence Peabody, kin 2 Stonington, CT Palmer, the same for Deborah Peabody, his widow, who d. 3 or 8 Feb 1821, 77 years. Death was in Gazette of September 23, 1812. Check also Phenix newspaper (not done). Where was John buried?

Other Peabodies:

A Peabody will in fragments has a John Peabody of Newport, Yeoman, wife Sarah, son John, daughters Rachel and Elizabeth, in 1731. There was a John Peabody who married Dorcas Sweet and had a son Joseph born November 9, 1735. Joseph and Barbara had Caleb Oct 25, 1756, John May 19, 1758, Benjamin, Mary, Benjamin, and Dorcas. This may be another Peabody family, not derivative of the Pabodie-Pabody clan.

The 1810 Census lists a John Pabody in Portsmouth, over 45, wife over 45, no children listed. In the 1800 Census, he's listed in the Portsmouth Census as over 45, wife over 45, one female child between 10 and 15. In the 1790 Census, John Pabodie is listed with a household of 4 near the end of the 4 page census of Portsmouth, 2 males, 1 over 16, two females. There's a John Pabodie listed in the 1774 RI Census, p. 24, b. 1760 in Portsmouth, household of 7, 1 M 16+, 3 M 16-, 1 F 16+, 2 F 16-. On page 27, the same census lists a John Peabodie b. 1760 Portsmouth with a household of 3, all 16+, 1 M, 2 F. As noted above, Prudence Island is part of the town of Portsmouth, but there is no indication in the censuses whether any were residents of Prudence Island.

There are John Pabodys living in both Middletown and Portsmouth in the 1790 Census for RI. The John Pabodie in Middletown is listed next to the family of Joseph Pabodie. He was born in 1758 and died in 1809, explaining why he does not appear in the 1810 Census. This John has a family of 4: 1 m over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females. The Portsmouth John Pabodie is not listed near other Pabodies. This John has a family of 4: 1 m over 16, 1 m under 16, 2 females. In the 1800 Census, this John (presumably the same) has a household of 3: 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+, 1 female 10 to 15.

No Jeremiah Pabodie who fits the necessary parameters can be found in the census records. There was a later Jeremiah in Newport, and there was a Jeremiah from Salem, MA, who served in the Revolutionary War.

Thomas Huddy Peabodie's death record (RIVR) lists his parents as John and Abigail, not Jeremiah. Did John and Deborah have another son, John, b. 1760?

Mary Stoddard was born on 30 July 1737 in Little Compton, Rhode Island.1 John Pabody and she were married about 1758 in Little Compton, Newport County, Rhode Island. John Palmer and she were married on 7 November 1767 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. She died in 1822 at age ~85.
Checking RIVR on NEHGS web site, Mary Stoddard's birth was listed as July 30, 1737, of Israel and Elizabeth, with a note that she married John Peabodie. (4-14-03)

Her father's will, dtd 18 July 1781, gave her one old-fashioned chest.

There are several Mary Stoddards in RI records in 1700's: Mary Stoddard Palmer, b. July 30, 1737, dau. of Israel of Little Compton will dtd. 18 July 1780; Mary b. ca. 1746 m. Mary Stoddard of Little Compton delivered a male bastard child b. July 19, 1765 and said John Palmer Jr. of Little Compton was the father (Nov 1765 Court Record). She married John Palmer in 1767 (int. November 7, 1767 in Dartmouth).

In her father Israel's will dtd. 3 Dec 1781, she is listed as daughter Mary Palmer.

A Mary Stoddard is listed in RI Cemetery Records as being born abt. 1738, died October 18, 1822, buried in LC012. Another Mary Pease Stoddard was born ca. 1738, died June 6, 1764, buried in NT003.

Another theory: daughter of one of the sons of Sgt. Samuel Stoddard of Hingham, b. June 14, 1640, d. September 16, 1731, resided at corner of Main St. and Elm., Hingham. Wife: Elizabeth Gill, dau. of Thomas and Hannah Otis Gill, b. in Hingham bef. June 1647, d. May 8, 1693. Sons whose children are not known: Samuel, b. August 11, 1670 (resided in Scituate); Stephen, b. September 18, 1674; Simon, b. February 17, 1679; Jeremiah, b. November 3, 1683; or David, b. March 19, 1693. Samuel was the son of John Stoddard, b. in Hull, England, died in Hingham, MA, December 19, 1661, wife Hannah. They had two sons whose descendants are unknown: John, b. December 10, 1608, m. Hannah Bryant, dau. of John and Mary Lewis Bryant, December 13, 1665; and Daniel, b. 1633, m. Abigail Lane, dau of Andrew and Triphany Lane, December 27, 1665.

See The Stoddard Book (1912) for possible assistance. Quoted in Little Compton Families.

The Mayflower Society "Silver Book," Vol. 16, denies that Mary Stoddard married John Pabodie and lists only the marriage to John Palmer, with what justification I don't know. Mary Stoddard had person sources.2
