Charles Redchester
M, #10212, b. 4 April 1797, d. 17 October 1871
Parents
Biography
Charles Redchester was born on 4 April 1797 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He and
Eliza Birks were married on 25 December 1817 in Saint Peter's Cathedral, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
1 He died on 17 October 1871 at age 74 in Blue Boy Saint, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
He was christened March 4, 1798, at Cathedral St. Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
It seems strange that they had only one child. Doublecheck.
He, 40, and Eliza, 45, were living on Shepherd Street, North Sheffield, at the time of the 1841 Census. He was a steel plate maker. Both were born in Yorkshire. They were the only Regesters listed in Yorkshire. Note birthdate doesn't compute.
He had a shop, Charles Regester and Son, manufacturers of steel plates for engraving, situated at Court 2, Blue Boy St., Sheffield. The shop was located in the Crofts, a tough neighborhood bounded by Shalesmoor St., St. Philip's Church on the west, and St. George's church on the south. He died while boarding with an Elizabeth Renwick, 50 years his junior, on Blue Boy Street.
The family lived on Sheppard Street, Sheffield, in the 1841 Census. By this census, the name Redchester had been dropped and replaced by Regester. This would have been because the enumerators could not spell too well, or the Sheffield accent being so strong as to make Redchester sound like Regester according to John Register. None of these ancestors could read or write, so there was no one to correct the enumerators. Charles Redchester had person sources.
2 He was christened on 4 March 1798 at Cathedral Saint Peter in Sheffield, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.

Eliza Birks
F, #10213, b. 1792, d. 27 June 1854
Parents
Biography
Eliza Birks was born in 1792 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
Charles Redchester and she were married on 25 December 1817 in Saint Peter's Cathedral, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
1 She died on 27 June 1854 at age ~62 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
John and Ruth had a daughter named Eliza born 1771. Whether they had a second daughter named Eliza born 22 years later has not been verified. The first Eliza may have had an illegitimate child who was the Eliza who married William (John Register -- "our Eliza may have been born on the wrong side of the sheets"), in which case we don't know the father and John and Ruth would be pushed back a generation.
It's confusing, because John or Jonathan Birks had several daughters named Elizabeth, some of whom may have died. There's no record in the IGI of an Eliza or Elizabeth born in 1792. An Elisabeth Birks (no husband) had a daughter Elisabeth chr. September 2, 1794.
Eliza Regester was living with her son and daughter-in-law, William and Charlotte Regester, on Shepherd Street in the 1851 Census
There was an Eliza Birks, dau. of James and Anne Birks, christened December 16, 1790 at Queen St. Independent or Congregational Church, Sheffield. Jamees Birks married Ann Kirkby January 12, 1790, at Cathedral St. Peter, Sheffield. Two James Birks were christened at Cathedral St. Peter in 1763 and 1767, son of Miles Birks on May 1, 1763, and the son of George Birks November 18, 1767. An Ann Kirby was chistened October 5, 1767, at Ripon, Yorkshire, daughter of William. Another was chistened June 13, 1767, in Leppington, Yorkshire, daughter of Peter. Yet another was chistened December 12, 1766,at Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, daugher of Thomas. A 4th was christened March 21, 1762, at Upper Independent Presbyterian Chapel-NC, Sheffield, daughter of James and Hannah. Some Kirkbys were already in the Cathedral St. Peter -- marriages listed of them about that time.
