Biography

Gamaliel Leonard was born on 31 May 1757 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He and Anna Wetherell were married on 17 February 1783 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.2,3 He died on 7 August 1827 at age 70 in Fairhaven, Rutland County, Vermont.
Gamaliel was a private in Capt. Phillip King's company, Col. George Williams' 3rd Bristol County regiment, 1776, and saw service in Boston and at Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War. He removed to Lenox, MA, worked at a forge there, then to Pittsfield, then to Greensfield (now Hampton Mills), NY, then to Fairhaven, VT. In January 1786, he bought 120 acres of land and erected a saw mill. In 1788, with Elias Stevens and Daniel Arnold, he erected a forge. He was a selectman at Fairhaven in 1811.

Mass. Marriages, 1633-1850, lists Zadock and Cynthia marrying 1 Jan 1797 in Middleborough.

He was living in Wareham at time of second marriage; Lydia was from Rochester, MA. (Wareham VR, CD, p. 128). Did he move to Stonington, CT, or was that another Zadock? Were they members of the Westerly (RI) Christ Church? 1850 Census shows Zadock, 84, and Lydia, 71, Leonard living in Stonington. They had no children. Zadock Leonard had person sources.3,4

Biography

Benjamin Leonard was born about 1761 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Judith Macomber were married on 6 May 1781 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He and Unknown were married about 1796 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 6 August 1843 at age ~82 in Weston, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Or did he die in Westmoreland?
He moved to Westmoreland, NH. He was there for 1790 Census. In 1810 he was an insane person. Boughton White was his guardian. He was not in the 1820 census, but does appear in the 1830 Census age 60-70 with a woman 60-70 in the household.

There was a Benjamin Leonard household listed next to Paul Leonard household in the 1790 Census for Raynham. Benjamin Leonard household consisted of 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, and 2 females.

He must have had a second wife for the children born after 1795. ECL does not mention a second wife.

In 1802, he was declared non compos. ECL says he was in the Army and came to it from drinking. Taunton land records: 15 March 1802 - Samuel Leonard, 2nd of that name in Raynham, non compos mentis, wife Lucy sells her right in land to Walter Leonard. Walter was Samuel's brother. Samuel Leonard had person sources.2 He was born in 1767.
