It would have been very unusual for a man in the early 1700s to not name one of his older sons, if not the oldest son, after his father. So James BURROUGHS likely had a son named Jeremiah, possibly by a first wife.
The given name William comes from the SALYER family. Deborah's father or grandfather was William SALYER of Newtown (and other places).
Another possible son of James BURROUGHS and Deborah SALYER is the John who married Mary GOODWIN in Newtown on 21 Jan 1737/38. Mary was from Jamaica, so this John was probably the John baptized 27 Aug 1710 in Grace Church in Jamaica (who moved to Elizabethtown NJ). Also, James and Deborah's son Benjamin married 3 days after John. If they were brothers, wouldn't they have had a double ceremony? Or at least not have scheduled the weddings so close together. And yet a 1758 Fishkill land record mentioned a John BURROWS.
