He and Malinda Leonard were married on 10 June 1856 in Orange County, Indiana. He and Martha Ann Robbind were married on 25 November 1860 in Orange County, Indiana. He died on 27 February 1874 at age 68 in Douglas County, Kansas.

In the 1850 Census, the family was farming in French Lick, Orange Co., IN. Were there more children (e.g. George Benton Leonard, Charles Loren Leonard?).

In the 1850 Census, he was a farmer living with his family in Patoka, Crawford Co., IN. Did he have a son, Silas, b. 1833 in Orange Co., by a previous wife? Or was Silas the son of one of his brothers?
