Elisha Russel Leonard was born on 19 March 1808 in Worthington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Alternatively, he may have been born in Berkshire Co., MA, or eastern NY, conflicting information. He and Lydia Almira ("Ann, Libbie") Forbes were married about 1834 in Canada. Record of marriage in MI, but no date. US and International Marriage Records list his marriage in London, Ontario, Canada. Their children are also listed as being born in Canada, although in the 1850 Census, they were all living on a farm in Burtchville, St. Clair Co., MI. He died on 22 October 1874 at age 66 in Grant, Saint Clair County, Michigan. Michigan death certificate lists his parents as Elisha Leonard and Elizabeth Brown.

Russel was a shingle maker. He settled in MI about 1847 and went by his middle name, Russel. There was another Elisha Leonard in Cattaraugus Co., NY, with whom this Russel can be easily confused. There was also a Russel Leonard who lived in Canada in the 1830's.

There is a possibility that he was the Charles Russel Leonard born abt. 1808 (19 Mar 1808?) who lived in Union Springs, Cayuga Co., NY in 1830, married there, had a child, Charles Russel Leonard, Jr., and apparently abandoned wife and child abt. 1832 and disappeared while on a trip to MI to look for new farm land. Was he born in Chesterfield or Worthington? Another researcher listed Russel A. as born 27 June 1808 in Chesterfield, Franklin Co., MA, and later living in Burtchville, MI. Elisha Russel Leonard lived in Burtchville, Saint Clair, Michigan, in 1850. He lived in The Town Of Burtchville, Saint Clair, Michigan, in 1860. He lived in Michigan in 1870.
