He and Mary Coburn were married on 9 April 1840 in Henry, Henry County, Indiana. He died on 21 October 1854 at age 74 in Henry County, Indiana. He was buried in 1854 in Henry, Indiana.

There is confusion over Zephaniahs. One source has Zephaniah b. 1780 in NJ, another 1786 in Shrewsbury, NJ, a 3rd 1798 in PA, a 4th b. 1818 OH, fa. b. NJ, mo. b. PA. They are probably different Zephaniahs, but some may be fathers and sons. They appear to be descendants of Nathaniel.

(per 1850 Census) Zephaniah moved to Logansport, Cass Co., NJ, where he was a market gardener, dying there 2 Jul 1881. This Zephaniah was the son of another Zephaniah who moved to Henry Co. "when that locality was yet in a most primitive condition." He gave each child an 80 acre farm. Zephaniah, Jr. lived there in Henry Co. until 1877. His son, John L., came to Cass Co. at age 20, worked for Sanderson & May in the marble business for 2 years, clerked for a year for Michael McCaffrey in his grocery store, and for almost 11 years as a messenger for the Panhandle Railroad. In 1890 he established a grocery store in Logansport that was successful. He married Dora Busjah on 25 May 1885. One son: Russell Leonard. (per History of Cass County.)
