The family was living at 126 Summer Lane, St. Stephen (St. George sub-reg), Birmingham, at the time of the 1851 Census. Children: Sarah, 17, Daniel, 14, Maria, 9, Henry, 7, Eliza, 3, and Agnes, 10 mos. Daniel and his son Daniel were gun stockers, while Sarah was a dress maker.

The family was living at 33 New John St., St. Georges, Birmingham, at the time of the 1871 Census. Daniel was a gun maker. Eliza, Agnes, and Emma were still living at home.

Daniel set up the gun-making business under the name of "D Leonard and Sons. He had a shop at 131 Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham and the family lived above it for a while. Their specialty was double barreled rifles for the trade, selling through W. J. Jeffrey & Co. Both firms had outlets on Queen victoria Street in London -- Jeffery at number 60 and Leonard at 147. Harry Leonard had his workshop at 19 Lench Street in Birmingham. During World War I, Harry, Daniel, and Samuel served as armourers in England, all with the rank of sergeant.
