He was the son of Ralfe Mainwaring, Justiciar of Chester. Sir Ralph le Mesnilwarin, knight, was Justiciar of Chester England from about 1192 to 1204. The records concerning the descent of the Mainwaring family are somewhat confused, but apparently they descended from Hugh de Waren, Bishop of Coutance, who died about 1020, is believed to be the earliest known ancestor of the family of Mainwaring. His son was allegedly Randolphus de Warenna, who allegedly had held the land in Windham, County Norfolk, which had been foreited to he King about 1075, indicating he may have participated in the rebellion of Ralph Guador that year. His son, Randolphus, tentant of Wayborn who was enfeoffed by Earl Hugh of Chester. Randolfus was lord of various towns in Cheshire and Norfold at the time of the Domesday survey in 1086.
