Philip Henry Kells was born on 4 April 1813 in Claverack, Columbia County, New York.

Charlotte Brazee Sheldon were married on 28 January 1832 at Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ghent, New York. He died on 10 March 1896 at age 82 in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan.
In the 1850 Census, he was listed as Philip A. and living in Hudson, NY, and listed as a machinist with a worth of $2500. He had his wife and all his children in the household, as well a a number of men including Alexander Kells, 25 (b. 1825) and Charles Kells, 25 (b. 1825). In the 1855 NY State Census he is listed as a shoemaker with eight children. The 1860 City Directory notes that he was a machinist. Birth dates for his wife and children are estimated from the ages listed in the Census. In the 1860 Census, he and the family, minus Allen, Maria, and Jacob, were in Albany, Floyd Co., MI. By the time of the 1880 Census, he was in Adrian, MI, where he was located in 1900 and listed as a farmer. Wait a minute, he died in 1876 in Indiana?
Philip H. Kells had a machine shop in Hudson in 1851. Allen and Charles Kells lived in Hudson in 1851; Allen a machinist, Charles a carpenter.
Philip patented the second successful mower in the US. He moved to New Albany, Indiana, and established Kells and Sons to manufacture mowers.

He was living with his parents at 29 N. Sixth St., Hudson and listed as a machinist in the 1850 Census. He apparently went to California in the 1860's and lived in Shasta County until 1896 or later; at least an Allan Kells is listed as registered to vote there.
Did he marry and have a son, Allen G. Kells, who is buried with him and Philip H. Kells in St. Thomas Lutheran Cemetery, Churchtown?
