Hiram Leonard was born on 25 September 1802 in Chittenden, Rutland County, Vermont. He and Almira Bernard were married on 1 November 1832. He and Maria Dodge were married on 24 March 1838. He and Charlotte Dodge were married on 21 September 1863. He died in 1885 at age ~83 in Vermont. He was buried at Old Congregational Cemetery in Pittsford, Vermont.

ECL: He lived in Pittsford, VT. He had a good education. He taught school in the winter, worked on the farm in the summer. He bought a saw mill at Mill Village.

He may have been the Hiram Leonard, b. Vt., appt. to West Point from NY, major/paymaster 1849, lt. col., col. March 13, 1865, brig. gen. 1865, ret. 1872.

There was also a Luther Leonard, West Point cadet appointed from VT, ordnance, retired 1861, died Feb. 11, 1865, at Somerville, MA. Was he a member of this family?

He is listed in the 1850 Census as a lawyer living in Pittsford, Rutland Co., VT, with wife Maria, 35, and children: Asa H, 10, Luther, 9, Charlotte A., 6, Capen F., 4, and Almira M, 1. The family is also in the 1860 Census, with Charlotte Dodge (Maria's sister?) living with them. Hiram Leonard had person sources.¹
