After the battle, Joshua, his wife Esther, and their daughter Lydia were taken captive and forced on the march to Quebec. Joseph Pomeroy survived the attack and remained at Deerfield. Esther was killed along the way, both Joshua and Lydia survived and returned to Massachussets about 1708.

The Raid on Deerfield occurred during Queen Anne's War on February 29, 1704, when joint French and Native American forces under the command of Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville attacked the English settlement at Deerfield, Massachusetts just before dawn, razing the town and killing fifty-six colonists. De Rouville's forces consisted of forty-seven French and French Canadian soldiers and 200 Native Americans, mostly Abenaki, Kanienkehaka and Wyandot, accompanied by a few Pocumtuck. Of the colonists killed, twenty-two were men, nine were women, and twenty-five were children. The novel, The Ransom of Mercy Carter, gives a very good and detailed story of Mercy Carter's journey.
A total of 109 residents, including the women and children who had survived the attack, were taken captive and forced on a months-long, 300-mile trek to Quebec in harsh winter conditions; twenty-one of them died along the way.[1] More than sixty of those who reached Quebec were eventually ransomed or otherwise managed to make their way back to New England, but a number of others, including Eunice Williams, the young daughter of Deerfield's pastor, chose to remain in French and Native communities, such as Wendake, for the rest of their lives.

Biography

Deacon Reuben Leonard was born on 25 November 1716 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He and Miriam Day were married after 22 December 1739 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. He died on 23 August 1805 at age 88 in West Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.

He lived in West Springfield and deeded his homelot of 110 acres over to his son, Thaddeus. Revolutionary War veteran. DAR Patriot index, also Jacobus.

He married, late in life, Martha (Leonard) Lewis, b. abt. 1730, d. 20 Jan 1814, age 84, daughter of Ebenezer Leonard and Martha Miller (per Jacobus).

Jacobus has a different list of children for Reuben and Mirian, with Patience and an extra Enoch. Another manuscript at the Springfield Historical Library lists twins Enoch and Timothy b. 14 Dec 1755. Deacon Reuben Leonard had person sources.¹

MA town VR's are quite definite that Abel Leonard had a daughter, Keziah, b. 22 Apr 1743, and that a Keziah Leonard married Nathaniel Eaton on 19 Feb 1761, further that a Keziah Leonard married Gustavus Ellsworth 17 Apr 1766 in Springfield. There doesn't seem to be another Keziah with whom this Keziah could be confused. Keziah Leonard had person sources.¹

She would have been too old to have many children. Isaac Colgrove is listed in the 1810 Census for Otsego Co., NY, with a household of 9, including 7 children. This Isaac or another? Sarah Leonard had person sources.¹ She was christened on 30 October 1746 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.

They apparently had no children.

He served in Capt. Preserved Leonard's company during the Revolutionary War. Fold3 identifies him as serving as a ranger with James Leonard in VT.

Note that there were several Abel Leonards naming sons Abel Leonard, and some family researchers are mixing them up. Abel Leonard had person sources.¹ He was christened on 15 March 1751 in West Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
