Biography

Joseph Leonard was born in 1718 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He and Ruth White were married on 27 March 1746 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1 He died in 1813 at age ~95 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
This Joseph is mistaken for the Joseph, son of Elkanah, in the genealogies submitted by subscribers to Ancestry.com. The ECL-GML papers are quite explicit that the Joseph who married Ruth White was the son of Joseph, grandson of Benjamin, great-grandson of James. This Joseph was known as Joseph Leonard 2nd and so labeled in the Middleborough VR's, being the second Joseph born in Middleborough during this period. Joseph 1st was the son of Elkanah, born in 1705.

This Joseph could be the Joseph, 45+, living in Middleborough in the 1800 Census with one female, 26-44 (a daughter?). (No marriage is listed for daughter Hannah, b. 1766, who may have been living at home.)

Joseph Leonard's sons Archippus, George, Samuel, Rowland, and Ichabod were all in a company with a Corporal Joseph Leonard (this Joseph?) during the Revolutionary War.

Born 1718 or 1722? Birth not in Middleborough VR's. Death doesn't appear there either.

See the notes for Joseph Leonard 3rd who married Abigail Raymond for a description of the "multiple Joseph" problem in Middleborough in the 1700's. Joseph Leonard had person sources.2

Doublecheck Ruth White. There were a number of Ruth Whites. Benjamin White, her father, had two or three wives. Ruth White is sometimes given the children of Joseph Leonard and Abigail Raymond, but the names don't fit with those used in the White family and Ruth would have been too old to have some of the children. Death in Carver VR's. Ruth White had person sources.4

Biography

Benjamin Leonard was born in 1725 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He and Bethiah Drake were married about 1750 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Abigail Harvey Eddy were married on 11 August 1811 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 He died on 22 October 1818 at age ~93 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.2
Benjamin was an iron worker.

His will, dated April 11, 1818 leaves to "Abigail, wife, Zebulon, Lydia, and Elvira, the three youngest children of my son, Benjamin (who predeceased his father), to my eight daughters: Hannah, widow of Joseph Boodry, Wealthy, wife of Joseph Frasier, Abigail, wife of Abiathar Macomber, Zilphy, wife of Q. Walker, Lydia, wife of Asahel Eddy, Bethiah, wife of Oliver Reed, Mercy, wife of Timothy Eddy, Abiah, wife of Allen Wetherell, $500 each. To Benjamin Owen, $3000, to my sons Lemuel, Joseph, Stephen, and Elijah. The $1500 given to Abiah Wetherell to be paid to Ichabod Leonard to be kept in his hands."

It seems unlikely he and his son Benjamin both died on October 22, 1818. Since he predeceased his father, which his father knew when he prepared the will, the son must have died before 11 April 1818.

Birthdates of children need to be verified. They aren't in Taunton VR's. Children are in Fanny Koster Leonard's charts. Benjamin Leonard had person sources.3
