In April 1382 he was sent to Lisbon to demand payment of wages for the English and Gascon forces by the King of Portugal, but was received badly by Ferdinand because they had raided Estremadura against his orders.

The king's affairs were a cause celebre with certain of the aristocracy, who conspired against him...but unlike Gaveston, who was simply stabbed to death, Hugh the younger was brutally executed, hanged, drawn, and quartered, a particularly gruesome fate, as a common criminal.
He is speculated to have offered violence, certainly disrespect for the queen. He was an English Channel pirate during a brief period of exile, returned to the king's favor, and seems to have behaved badly toward his female relatives, depriving them of rights and lands, and in one case breaking the arms of one lady.
His behavior, noted for violence and rapacity above and beyond the pale, was a very major cause of the disaffection of various nobles from Edward II.
Remains found at Hulton Abbey, in Staffordshire, are claimed by anthropologist Mary Lewis to be the remains of Hugh le Despenseur, in 2008. The land was owned by a relative of his at the time of his execution, and the remains, hacked up considerably, are missing the pieces sent to his widow when she attempted to claim his remains for burial. There is considerable credence for the identification.
