14 SIR THOMAS BECKWITH
Of Clint, and by marriage Lord of one third part of the manors of Filey-maston and Thorpe; married a daughter and co heiress of Sir William Heslerton, co heiress to the said manors of Filey-maston and Thorpe, derived from Havisia, daughter and co-heiress of Ralph de Neville, one of the great and powerful Norman barons (see page 49); Sir Thomas died tenth year of Henry VII; issue five sons surviving. Thomas the eldest son and Adam the fourth son died without issue. The second son, Sir William, succeeded to the title and had issue but his line became extinct in the next generation. Robert the fifth son married the daughter of Lawenthorp and was the ancestor of the greater portion of the English branch of the Beckwith family. Many of his descendants have filled high and important public offices and their names figure prominently in the military, judicial and civil annals of England (See pages 28 to 31)

Of Clint and Dacre, second son and heir sold the manor of Clint which had been in the family since 1226 and bought the manors of Featherstone and Acton near Pontefract, Yorkshire.
Married twice, by his first wife Anne, daughter of Dynley, of Bramhope County York he had four sons and seven daughters.
Thomas the eldest son inherited Acton and had three sons: Thomas the eldest had numerous issue his seventh son George was born at Featherstone Castle 1610 and emigrated to Maryland in 1648
William the second son was baptized at Feather stone Castle in 1571 emigrated to America landing at Jamestown Va 1607
Roger the third son married twice succeeded by his son Arthur Beckwith a Captain in the Parliamentary Army who was killed in battle 1642 his second son Roger was knighted and created a Baronet of England by Charles II 1681 He had two sons first Sir Roger Marmaduke the second son was born 1678 emigrated to Virginia in 1700 Clerk of Richmond County Va 1708 to 1748 eventually succeeded to his father's title his son Sir Jonathan of Virginia was born in Richmond county Va signer of Northern Neck Declaration protesting against the Stamp Act 1765 See page 37 and Virginia Records

20 MATTHEW BECKWITH
Born at Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, about 1600; emigrated to New England, 1635; came over with Mr Winthrope and became temporarily a settler at Saybrook Point (Connecticut Records) at Bramford, 1638; Hartford, among the first settlers, 1642. Lyme, 1651. He purchased large tracts of land on the Niantic River, lying principally in and around Lyme and New London. Mould & Art ship builders constructed for him the barque Endeavor (Hinman's Connecticut, Settlers and Public Records of Connecticut) which was the first vessel launched from New London. He was of that class known as planters “gentlemen” many of whom were men of means who placed their vessels in charge of competent mariners, who also attended to the mercantile transactions and interests of the owners. He was accidentally killed by falling from a cliff of rocks, December 13, 1681, leaving a widow, Elizabeth and five sons 1) Matthew, 2) John, 3 Joseph, 4) Nathaniel and 5) Benjamin and two daughters, one of whom married Benjamin Grant and the other married Robert Girard .
