John Jacob Faesch
M, #25103, b. 1729, d. 1799
Biography
John Jacob Faesch was born in 1729 in Basle, Switzerland. He and
Susannah Leonard were married on 21 April 1790. He died in 1799 at age ~70. He was buried at First Presbyterian Cemetery in Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey.
John was an early ironmaster of Morris Co., NJ.
John Jacob Faesch I (1729-1799). (b. 1729, Basle, Switzerland - d. May 29, 1799, Morris County, New Jersey, USA) He married Elizabeth Brinkerhoof (1751-1788) and had the following children: John Jacob Faesch II (1776-1809); Richard Brinckerhoff Faesch (1778-1820); and Eliza Faesch (1778-1820) who married William H. Robinson. In the Biographical and Genealogical History of Morris County, Lewis Publishing, 1899 it says the following: "Mr. Faesch was born in Basel, Switzerland in 1929 and came to the United States in 1764 to become an iron master at Ringwood, New Jersey. He became a citizen of the State in 1766. In 1772 Faesch acquired by lease and purchase the iron works and mines on a 6,000 acre tract at Mt. Hope, New Jersey, where he furnished substantial quantities of cannon and a variety of cast and hollow ware products for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. After the War, he leased and managed other iron works including those that were located in old Boonton. Following the death of his second wife in 1788, he moved his family from Morristown to old Boonton to reside in the Manor House built by Samuel Ogden. When he died in 1799, the Boonton properties were inherited by his two daughters, one of whom married William H. Robinson of New York City in 1801. Mr. Faesch very early threw in his loyalties and sympathies with those of the patriots. He had no personal loyalty to the British King. The record of his activities and achievements is long and impressive. He gave great service as a prominent and first citizen of Rockaway Township to civic duties and responsibilities. Mr. Faesch was a leader in every sense of the word. As such, he was elected one of three delegates from Northwest Morris County to the Federal Constitutional Convention that established New Jersey as a State. Mr. Faesch was not only an ironmaster. He was a member of the F. and A.M. Order of Msons and was elected a Grand Master. His membership has historical significance since his dispensation from the Grand Lodge of New Jersey has been kept and is in the possession of the New Jersey Historical Society in Newark, where it is the oldest extant document of Masonry in this State. He was also named Trustee of the Morristown Academy, a fact which showed his interest in, and dedication to, education."
