Edward Vaughan
M, #13687, b. April 1844, d. 15 May 1923
Parents
Biography
Edward Vaughan was born in April 1844 in Wales. He and
Charlotte Magill Dow were married about 1865. He died on 15 May 1923 at age 79 at Bronx in New York City, New York.
He immigrated to the United States in 1877. He had not been naturalized as of 1900. Had he been married before (daughter Mary)? It seems unlikely that he would have married Charlotte Dow, who was born in NY, in 1865 in England or Wales.
He was a tailor at the time of the 1880 Census. The family was living in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was born in Wales (or England), as were his parents. His wife was born in New York, as were her parents.
In the 1900 Census, the family was living in Bayonne, Hudson Co., New Jersey. Edward was a merchant tailor, and his son Edward was a bookkeeper. All of the children, except Mary, were still living at home. Edward had immigrated to the U.S. in 1877 from England. They owned their own home. They were living at 74 West 5th Street, Bayonne. They later owned a brownstone home in Manhattan. They had been married 35 years and had had 9 children, of which 3 survived.
In 1917, he was living at 191 Broadway, New York City, NY, according to his son's WWI draft card.
He may have been the Edward Vaughan b. abt. 1844 in Henllan, Denbighshire, Wales, of David Vaughan 1818-1863 and Jane Williams 1819-1897. In the 1861 Census, he was living with William and Catherine Williams, his grandparents, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Catherine. He was a grocers shop man in 1861. An Edward Vaughan was arrested for throwing stones at a police carriage in 1855 and sentenced to hard labor. But it can't be determined whether it was this Edward.
David and Jane had 8 children: Emma, b. 1841; Edward, b. 1844; Elizabeth, b. 1846; Dinah, b. 1848; Ann, b. 1850; Catherine Jane, b. 1855; Henry William, b. 1857; and David, b. 1860. David was the son of Henry Vaughan, b. 1791-Mar 1866, Denbighshire, Wales, m. Elizabeth Jeffries 5 Dec 1812 at Llanefydd, Denbighshire. Elizabethwas b. 1791 and d. 1838. They had 7 children: David, 1818-1863; Henry, 1822-1863; Ann, b. 1825; Mary, b. 1827; Catherine, b. 1831; Margaret, b. 1834; and Jane, 1837-1889.
