Charles John Oberg

Biography
Charles John Oberg was born on 11 May 1873 in Skön, Västernorrland, Sweden.
1 He and
Hilda Marie Anderson were married on 26 December 1902 in Wallace, Shoshone County, Idaho.
2 He died on 25 March 1922 at age 48 in Portland, Multinomah County, Oregon.
There was a Carl Johan Öberg born in 1873 in Skön, just outside of Sundsvall, who was living, along with his sister Hilda Olivia b. 1871, Sundsvall, in Skön. Carl and Olivia were orphaned in 1880 when their mother died (their father had died in 1875). They appeared to be living alone for a while, although near Johan Öberg and Erik Ödlund, both of whom may have been relatives. Later, they are listed as foster children living with the Ödlund family (Erik Fritjof Ödlund, b. 1845) in Selånger, just outside Sundsvall, in the 1890 Swedish census. The Ödlund household included: Erik Fritjof Ödlund b. May 30, 1845 in Tiverå, Esther Eriksdotter, b. October 13, 1854 in Själevad (Carl Johan's mother was born in Själevad), Martha, b. November 18, 1888, and Helena, b. February 10, 1892, Karl and Olivia Öberg, and Erik Ödlund, b. January 1, 1808 in Alnö. Source: GID: 2077.29.21200 -- Selånger Household Examinations, 1885-1895.
The sawmill where Olof Öberg worked was the scene of the first major labor strike in Sweden in the 1870's. Pay and working conditions were bad. It would be worth checking whether Olof died as the result of an industrial accident or labor unrest.
A Carl J. Oberg 19 years old arrived 15 June 1892 steerage on the Corean by way of Glasgow, Scotland, from Sweden bound for Marniette, Wisconsin (per manifest #0166). He could read and write.
According to the 1900 US Census, Charley Oberg, born May 1873, was rooming in dwelling #62, Mullan, Idaho, with Charles and Hilda Bloom. He came to America in 1892 at the age of 18, according to the 1900 Census. He was a naturalized citizen. Also living with the Blooms was a Carl F. Anderson, born in Sweden in October 1865, who came to the US in 1881 (relative of Charley's eventual wife, Hilda Anderson?).
A Carl Öberg, American citizen, arrived on 6 November 1901 on the Oceanic by way of Liverpool from Sundsvall, Sweden (per manifest #0004) in the company of Hilda Anderson, 20, female, from Sundsvall and Hilding Anderson, 22, male (her brother?). They were bound for Wallace, ID. It appears Carl/Charley saved some money, took a trip back to Sundsvall, Sweden, and returned with his bride-to-be.
On 28 December 1902, Charley Oberg, 28, married Hilda Marie Anderson, 22, in Wallace, Idaho, the county seat. Witnesses included the Blooms.
Charles Oberg worked at the Gold Hunter mine, now an offshoot of the Lucky Friday mine in Mullan, Idaho.
In the 1910 Census the family was living in house # 23, Morning Preserves (?), Mullan, Idaho. Charles John was a miner in a lead mine. He and Hilda had been married 7 years, had 3 children, of which 2 were still living. He had emigrated in 1891; she in 1901. He was a naturalized citizen.
Joseph Vernon Oberg was born about the time the 1910 Census was taken. The Big Fires of 1910 occurred August 23-24 in the Mullan area. Mullan was evacuated, and some of the houses burned. Could that have been the reason why the family moved to Washington?
A Charles Oberg died 26 March 1922 in Portland (record can be ordered - #910).
