William Henry Kells
M, #10352, b. 24 January 1806, d. before 1862
Parents
Family: Mary Yager (b. January 1807, d. 23 March 1902)
Biography
William Henry Kells was born on 24 January 1806 in Claverack, Columbia County, New York. He and
Mary Yager were married about 1829 in Claverack, Columbia County, New York. Was he the William H. Kells married 3 Oct 1829 in Claverack? So listed on ancestry.com, but can't find original record. He died before 1862 in Hudson, Columbia County, New York. His wife, Mary, is listed as a widow living at 36 Eighth Street in Hudson in the 1862 Hudson City Directory.
He was baptized March 9th,1806, in Claverack. Place of burial is not known, although suspicion is that he is buried in the Hudson City Cemetery. Death date of 29 May 1899 comes from FamilySearch. That seems unlikely.
He was a farmer living in Hudson, NY. His wife was Mary, born abt. 1807. Source: 1850 Census. In the NY State 1855 Census, he was born in Columbia County, had no trade, wife and all children except Margaret were living at home, which was a wood frame house valued at $1200.
Tracing the life of William H. Kells has been difficult. I haven't found a marriage record nor a death record. Was he the William Kells who died of intemperance May 10, 1858? I can't find him or his wife Mary in the 1860 Census, although there is a listing under Klse. He was probably not the William H. Kells, living in Hudson, in the 1870's up through 1885 and listed in the city directory as a laborer living on Warren St. That William H. was born abt. 1831, married to Sarah, and had children Carrie, Frank, and Jeanette. He was the William Kells, 65, laborer, b. in NY, living with a Sally Kells, 58, b. in NY, in Hudson, Ward 2, in the 1870 Census.
There was a William Kells in prison at east of 1st Street. And a John Kells also.
His son, Robert's, birth certificate identifies him as William H. Kells, b. in NY.
Alternate info: he married Maria Davis, per birth of first child. Or Mary Reynolds. Or Sally Eperael (per Arthur Kelly). Or Mary Yager (Robert Kells' death certificate)
A marriage is listed in NYG&B as William H. Velts and Mary Reynolds. 91:152. CD401. Only listing for William H. Velts, name possibly misspelled or miscopied. No clues as to her parents. Arthur Kelly, genealogist with expertise in the area, said it was not "my" William H. Kells.
Another source has William Kels and Sally Eperael, born about the same time as William and Mary, having John Kells, b. 15 Jul 1833 and Catherine Permilia Kells, b. 14 Aug 1835 - St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Churchtown. Also, they went on to have other children, including Theodore, Delia, and Daniel. Sally, listed as mother, was living with Theodore and his wife in the 1880 Census. Their children are different from the children that William H. Kells and Mary Yager had.
In F698 Columbia Co., NY, Deeds, Index to Grantors H-M 1772-1925, I noted 1827 grantors: William Kells, wife Maria, John Kells, wife Catharine, Jacob Kells, Philip Kells. Grantees: Henry Kells Liber-M pg. 104. Also 1834 Grantors: Henry Kells, wife Caroline, William H. Kells, wife Mary, et. al. Grantors: Jacob J. Rossman liber T page 562. No other William. William Henry Kells had person sources.
1 He was baptized on 9 March 1806 at Claverack Reformed Church in Claverack, New York. He was christened on 9 March 1806 at Reformed Church in Claverack, Columbia County, New York. He died on 29 May 1899 at age 93 in Hudson, Columbia, New York.

Mary Yager
F, #10353, b. January 1807, d. 23 March 1902
Biography
Mary Yager was born in January 1807 in Columbia County, New York.
William Henry Kells and she were married about 1829 in Claverack, Columbia County, New York. Was he the William H. Kells married 3 Oct 1829 in Claverack? So listed on ancestry.com, but can't find original record. She died on 23 March 1902 at age 95 in Probably Hudson, Columbia County, New York. She was 93 and living with her daughter, Sarah, also widowed, at 817 Warren St. in Hudson in the 1900 Census. She does not appear in the 1905 NY census.
Mary's parents, date of death, place of death and burial are uncertain. Birth in Jan 1807 in Columbia County is from the Federal Census 1900, where she is listed as Mary Kelle in the transcription and Mary Kells in the listing.
In the 1850 Census, William, 44, and Mary, 42, are living in Hudson, Ward 2, with all of their children. William is listed as a farmer.
In the 1855 New York State Census conducted 1 Jun 1855, Mary is wife to William H. Kells, born in Columbia County. All of the children are living at home, except Margaret. They're living in a frame house valued at $1200 with several other families. William has no profession or trade -- "none." They have been living in Hudson for 7 years. Nearby living are the Weldens -- wife Margaret is a daughter of William and Mary.
In the 1865 NY State Census, she as mother-in-law, age 58, born 1807 in Columbia County, is living with Calvin and Margaret Ann Kells Welden in Hudson. Calvin is a carpenter. Son James M. Kells is living with them.
She is listed in the 1862 Hudson City directory as a widow living at 36 Eighth Street. Son Robert is listed as a clerk boarding at 295 Warren St. William apparently died between 1855 and 1862. He was no longer living with Mary in any case.
Mary is listed as mother-in-law living with daughter Sarah L. Kells Smith, Sarah's husband, R. J. Smith, and the Smith's two daughters, Maude L. Smith and Lena Smith, in the 1875 NY Census.
It appears Mary Yager went to live with her daughter, Sarah Smith, after William died, and both mother and daughter went to live with the granddaughter's family, Maude Smith Slyter, after the daughter's mother died. Maude married J. Williard (Millard?) Slyter, b. Feb 1867, in 1893. He was the son of Millard Slyter, b. 1828, a grocer, and Lavinia. They are listed in the 1900 Census. One of my grandfather's friends was named Millard
Some records have her as Maria Davis. The 1850 Census refers to her as Mary. Son Robert's death certificate calls her Mary Yager.
There was a Marie Yager baptized at Claverack Reformed Church 2 Feb 1811, parents William Yager and Catherine Knickerbocker, sponsors John Yager and Eva Knickerbocker. Marie was born 24 Jan 1811 in Claverack (Source: Baptismal Record of Reformed Church, Claverack, NY 1727-1893, Arthur Kelly, 1970.)
A Mary Maria Yager was born 24 January 1811 in Claverack, NY. She married Gilbert Bonisteel and moved to/lived in Sidney Twp., Ontario, Canada. She had children by Bonisteel from 1836 through the 1840's. She was the daughter of Willem Yager b. 9 Sep 1784 in Claverack
Another Maria Yager was born before 3 Oct 1804 in Claverack. He died in 1899 in Ovid twp, Clinton Co., MI. She was the daughter of Wandal Yager, born 5 Jan 1774, brother of Willem above, and Eva Dings. She married John Gilbert 5 Aug 1823 in Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario. Wandel Yager is listed in the 1810 Census with a family of 10 in Claverack and in 1820 with a family of 15 in Ghent. It appears that two of the daughters were the right age to be a Mary or Maria born in 1807, but he already had a Maria (unless Maria was the first of two names, as per German tradition).
The more other parents from the 1820 and 1830 Censuses are Adam Yager of Clermont and James Yager of Taghanic, both having female children during the period when Mary was born. Most of the other Yagers previously living in Livingston had moved to Canada or western NY by the 1820's. Andreas is another possibility, but he appears to have left Columbia County by 1820.
A Solomon Jager was born 20 Sep 1761 in Rhinebeck, NY, and married Sally Price of Claverack 9 May 1790.
Johann Henrich Yager (Jager) had five sons, all born at Manorton, Columbia Co., NY. John A. Yager married Eva Knickerbacker 25 Jun 1797 in Linlithgo Reformed Church, Livingston, NY. The second son, Heinrich H. Yager, was born 21 January 1774 in Manorton, Columbia Co. He married Lena Dings. The third son, Wandel Yager, born 5 January 1774, is mentioned above. A fourth son, Peter Yager, was born 9 Dec 1782 in Claverack and married Christina. And the fifth son, William, was born 9 Sep 1784 in Claverack, mentioned above, and married Catherine Knickerbocker 9 Nov 1807 in Ancram, Columbia Co., daughter of Philip Knickerbocker and Anna Maria Dings. She was born 26 April 1787 in Mount Ross, NY and died 15 Sep 1869. Any of these could have been the parents of Mary Yager, although the Mary/Maria Yagers mentioned above eliminate those two.
There were also two Heinrich Yagers born in Columbia Co. in 1751 and 1752. John Heinrich "Henry" Yager was born in 1751 and died in 1809. He and his wife, Elizabeth Schmidt, had a daughter born 11 Oct 1807 and her name was Christina Helena. Heinrich "Henry P." Yager was born in 1752 and died 5 May 1827. He married Mary Dunspaugh Yager 1788-1817. He may have had a daughter, Mary. Both of these Henrys are buried in Claverack. Henry P. is listed as living in Hudson in the 1810 and 1820 Censuses. He had two daughters 10-15 in the 1810 census and had three daughters aged 16-25 in the 1820 census. This seems to eliminate a daughter born in 1807 (Mary).
Some undocumented sources say William's wife was Mary Reynolds. A Mary Reynolds b. May 19, 1808, daughter of Nehemiah Reynolds and Elizabeth White. They lived in Hudson at the time of the 1810 Census. They moved to New Lisbon or Westford, Otsego Co., NY before the 1820 Census.
Other possible leads as to other Mary Reynolds parents: Abraham Reynolds m. Sally Folger 10-28-1806, son Jacob, machinist, d. 11.29, 1848, in Hudson. Other Hudson Reynolds: Allen 1763-1827, Deborah 1766-1847, John 1772-1837, Margaret 1760-1839, Ruth 1779-1844, Samuel 1769-1841. Allen born April 14, 1763, m. February 9, 1783 Deborah Stratton, b. May 1, 1763, Allen d. Nov. 9, 1827 in Hudson. The 1850 Census lists 71 Reynolds in Columbia County in 1850, and that probably doesn't include all wives and kids. A Euphrenia Reynolds, 55, was living with another family in Claverack in 1850 (mother? doubtful). Reynolds families living in Hudson in the 1850 Census include Abram, Sarah, John, Ruth, Allen, Seth, Lucy, and Fred. Fred, b. 1810 and John, b. 1807, about the same age as Mary. Mary Yager lived in Hudson, ward 2, Columbia, New York, in 1850. She lived at Ward 4 in Hudson City, Columbia, New York, in 1855. She lived at District 03 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, in 1865.

Sarah Kells m. R. J. Smith abt. 1867 (NY State Census, 1875). They had two daughters, Maude, b. 1868, Columbia Co., and Lena, b. 1872, Columbia Co. They don't appear in the 1880 Census. Solomon ("Samuel") Lisk
M, #10359, b. about 1817, d. 1 April 1896
Parents
Family 1: Lodema Wait (b. February 1819, d. 7 May 1852)
Biography
Solomon ("Samuel") Lisk was born about 1817 in Preston Hollow, Albany County, New York. He and
Lodema Wait were married on 5 October 1839 in Stockport, Columbia County, New York. He and
Angenette Ostrander were married about 1853. He died on 1 April 1896 at age ~79 in Hudson, Columbia County, New York.
Solomon and Lodema were married by the Rev. Mr. Scovel in Stockport, NY. His place of burial is unknown, but assumed to be the Hudson City Cemetery.
He was a painter in Hudson, NY (1850 Census). He was listed in the Hudson Directory in 1851-2 as Lisk and Decker, carriage painters, at 9 Public Square.
In the 1855 NY Census, he is listed as a painter and having resided in Hudson for 12 years (since he was 25). He had an apprentice painter, James Crawford, 18, working with him. His wife, Angenette, 27, born in Wayne Co. and having resided in Hudson for 20 years, a dress maker, with another dress maker, Catherine Ann Rose, 20, boarder, living with them. There were three children in the household: Esther Wright Lisk, 12, Cornelia E. Lisk, 10, and Mary L. Lisk, 1.
The Wait and Lisk families were interrelated through marriages. Untangling the relationships and lines of descent is difficult due to incomplete information.
In the 1855 State Census, Bradford Orrison Wait, 40 (b. 1815), was living in Catskill, Greene Co., NY, along with his wife, Margaret, 39 (b. 1816 in Ulster Co.), son or brother, Richard, 22 (b. 1833 in Columbia Co.), and Richard's wife?, Sarah, 26 (b. 1829 in Ulster Co.). Bradford, Margaret, and Richard had been in Catskill 21 years (since 1834). Esther Wright, mother, 62, born in Greene Co. in 1793 in Greene Co. and had resided in Catskill for 4 years. In the 1860 Census, Bradford, 47, and Margaret, 46, were living with Esther Wright, 67, in Catskill. Bradford was a cartman. Next door was his son Richard, 25, also a cartman, wife Sarah A., 30, and their two children, James B., 3, and Emma I., 1. Bradford is also listed as a sexton for a cemetery in Catskill.
Orrison Bradford Wait was born 27 Oct 1812 in NY and died 30 Apr 1873 in Catskill, Greene Co., NY. He is buried in section 5, Catskill Village Cemetery. His mother was Esther Wright Wait. His first spouse was Margaret LNU, 1814-1865. Esther Wright Wait was born in 1793, died in 1869 in Catskill, Greene Co., NY.
One possibility is that Bradford, Richard, and Lodema Wait were siblings, son and daughters of an unknown Wait and Esther Wright. Lodema Wait, b. 1819, was Solomon's first wife. Her granddaughter, Fannie Lodema Smith, was apparently named after her. Fannie Lodema was the daughter of Solomon's daughter Cornelia Elizabeth Lisk, who married James N. Smith, Fannie Lodema's father.
In the 1860 Census, Solomon is listed as a painter, age 43, living with his wife, Angenette, 32, daughter Esther, 17, Elizabeth, 15, Mary L.,6, Edward H., 4, Annie L., 1, Francis Bathrick, 19, tailoress, and Esther Weight, 37 (b. 1823). In the 1866-67 Directory, he was listed as a constable living at 232 Partition. In 1870 Census, he's listed as white, born in New York, living in 3rd Ward, Hudson 921-366, occupation policeman. In the 1873 directory he was listed as a clerk living at 72 Warren Street. In the 1874 directory, he was listed as an auctioneer living at 72 Warren. His son, Edward H, was also living at 72 Warren and listed as a clerk.
In the 1875 NY Census, Solomon was 58, born in Greene Co., a painter. Ann J. (Angenette) was 48, born in Wayne Co. Edward H. was 19, born in Columnbia Co., a clerk in a hardware store. Anna L was 15 and born in Columbia Co. Ida F. was 13 and born in Columbia Co.
Solomon was 70 years old when he died.
Edward's bio says that Solomon Lisk came to Hudson as a boy from Preston Hollow, Albany County, in 1830.
Solomon, Deborah, and Caroline from the purported family all lived in Hudson at the same time. Who Deborah and Caroline married is unknown. Solomon and Deborah were both married in Hudson. A Charles Lisk is buried there.

Ray Justus (rwjustus@cox.net) has information on the descendants of a Benjamin Lisk (abt. 1743-1 June 1811) and Elizabeth Burroughs (17 May 1744 - 31 December 1815), who had a son James (21 June 1766 - 21 November 1843) and Margaret Carman (abt. 1772 - 8 April 1818), who had a son Israel (10 February 1792 - 25 February 1866) (in 1850 Census) and Elizabeth Skinner (5 May 1791 - 1 December 1870). Israel had 9 children, including a Solomon Lisk (15 September 1828 - 1917). Solomon was b. in NY and was a wagon maker who moved to Reynolds, MI. What's odd is that James and Margaret had only one child -- unless other children have been left out. Benjamin had 8 children, including a James and a Charles who had a son Charles (11 August 1811 - 18 March 1839) -- note a Charles is buried in Hudson Cemetery. Are there other Solomon Lisks in this family?

A Lodema Wait was married to Chester Wait. They lived in Ovid, Seneca Co., NY at the 1850 Census, along with 4 children under age 5. She was born Lodema Tracy 6 Jun 1823 in Enfield, Tompkins Co., NY.
Another Lodema Wait was married to Minn Wait as of the 1930 Census. They lived in Athens, Greene Co., NY. This Lodema was the Lodema Wait who m. (1) Herbert Kells in 1898.
Grave marker transcription shows date of 4 May 1852 for death, wife of Solomon (L and k legible, but middle 2 letters of Lisk are not) -- 33 years 1 month, 34 days; buried beside Charles Lisk d. 6 Apr 1867 30 y 8 m 20 d. (born 17 Jul 1836). Charles Lisk was not Solomon Lisk's brother, but may have been a nephew or cousin..
In the 1855 Census, a Bradford Orrison Wait, 40 (b. 1815), was living in Catskill, Greene Co., NY, along with his wife, Margaret, 39 (b. 1816 in Ulster Co.), son Richard, 22 (b.
His mother was Esther Wait. His spouse was Margaret LNU, 1814-1865.
Esther Wait was born in 1793, died in 1869 in Catskill, Greene Co., NY. Bradford, Margaret, and Esther are buried in the Catskill Village Cemetery, Section 5.
One possibility is that Bradford, Esther, and Lodema Wait were siblings, son and daughters of an unknown Wait and Esther Wright. Lodema Wait, b. 1819, was Solomon's first wife.
Further complications: In the 1870 Census, Bradford O. Wait, 51 (b. 1819), sexton for a cemetery, appears in Almira B. Wait born Smith, 27, (sister of James N. Smith), apparently his second wife, and three children: Bradford O. Wait, 13 (b. 1857), Omar W. Wait, 2 (b. in 1868), and Miner ("Minn") S. Wait 5/12, (b. in Jan or Feb 1870), all in Catskill. Bradford apparently died between 1870 and 1880. Almira, Omar and Miner disappear until the 1900 Census when Minor appears in Deep River, Middlesex, CT, married to Mary E. LNU. He and Mary are living in Saybrook, Middlesex Co., in 1910. In the 1925 NY State Census, he is a farmer residing in Athens, Greene Co., NY, wife Mary. Mary apparently died between 1925 and 1929. In the 1930 Census, he is a farmer married to Lodema. Lodema is Herbert Kells' third wife. Herbert died in 1904.
Omar married Cora J. late in life and lived in Godfrey twp., Madison Co., IL On his death certificate, his father was listed as William Wait, born in England, rather than Bradford O. Wait. His mother was listed as a Smith.
Bradford O. Wait, 13, living with Bradford O. and Almira Wait, in the 1870 Census is listed as Bradford O. Wait, 23, boatman, son of Richard, 38, (b. 1842), steamship agent, and Sophia 50 (b. 1830) in the 1880 Census. Richard and Sophia are the only Waits listed as living in Catskill in the 1880 Census. The only other Wait in Greene Co. in 1880 is Ida, 21, a servant in Cairo.
Across the river from Hudson are Athens and Catskill, Greene Co., NY, and directly south of Columbia County is Dutchess County. Dutchess County had a large number of Wrights, some Waits, and one Orrison as heads of households in the 1810 Census. There was an Esther Wright, b. 15 Mar 1794 in Fishkill, Dutchess Co. who died 16 Mar 1869. She was the dau. of John Wright, b. 14 Apr 1756 and d. 2 Sep 1839 in Fishkill, m. to Tamar Mabie 1782-1836. No info on whom this Esther married or where she died.
Rebecca Wait appears as a head of household in the 1820 Census in Athens, Greene Co. She would have been born about 1770 (45+ in 1820), household of 3. Thomas Wait 26-44 b. abt. 1770? appears in Catskill, Greene Co., in the 1810 Census, but not in 1820. He had a household of 6, 3 males, 2 females, and 1 slave. In the 1800 Census, he was living in Catskill; his name was spelled Waight; and he had a household of 6, 3 males (1 26-45), 3 females. In the 1800 Census a Samuel Waight lived in Hempstead, Queens Co., NY; several other Waights lived in Chenango Co.
