A James Leonard of Bristol, Somerset, in 1701 wrote his loving cousin, Samuel Leonard (which Samuel?) in Taunton, grandson of the emigrant James Leonard, offering to come to America as an expert ironmaster to work for the Boston merchant, John Hubbard. News of Hubbard’s new blast furnace and two forges near the old Braintree site on the Montiquot River, with two further forges and a power hammer at Lower Falls, Newton, on the Charles River, had evidently crossed the Atlantic (Awty, Hartley, pp. 273-76 also Alice Allen Everett, Leonards of Monmouthshire and Somersetshire, England, The American Genealogist, 1977, pp. 101-104.)

He paid the poll tax at Shoyswell 1552 as a servant to Thomas May and as Marten Le Mowle in 1572 and “Leonard” in 1576. His wife was buried at Burwash in Dec 1591 and he himself in March 1592.
