Family tradition has it that Jeffery was related to the Ephraim Leonard who married Hannah Wood. Also, Francis and Jacob Leonard may have been relatives, as they attended the baptisms of Jacob Francis and Jacob.
Jeffery was a member of the NYC militia in the Revolutionary War.

His given name may have been Orison rather than Orville (1850 Census).

He enlisted 9 Feb 1864 in Co. K, 6th Michigan Cavalry. He fought at Yellow Tavern, Meadow Ridge, Milford, Haw's Shop, Baltimore Crossroads,Cold Harbor, Trevallian Station, Summit Point, Opequan, Luray, Port Republic, Mount Crawford, Woodstock, and Sailors Creek. He was present at Appomattox when Gen. Lee surrendered. He later served in Kansas and Utah. He was wounded at Little Blue, NE.
They lived in Sunfield, MI.
