Timothy Leonard

M, #36961, b. about 1750

Biography

Timothy Leonard was born about 1750.
There was a Timothy Leonard, aged 70 years, whose death at New Marlborough, Berkshire Co., Mass, was reported in the June 14, 1817 Providence Gazette. It may have been this Timothy. He supposedly was born at Canterbury, CT, bound out and brought up in Woodbury, CT. Whe he was "of age," he went to Fredricksburg, NY, where his father then lived. He came to New Marlborough when about 24. He had been for 40 years deranged and lived off the produce of one acre of land. All meat he ate raw. He was found dead and buried by the neighbors at his place of abode. He's in the 1800 Census living alone. He was supposedly "crossed in hopeless love." His cabin was on the shore of Hermit Pond (named after him). His ancestry is unknown.

Biography

Henry Leonard was born in 1794 in Middle Granville, Washington County, New York. He died in his 80th year on the farm where he was born, according to the "History of Washington County."

This reference speculates that Henry may be related to Timothy Leonard, who also lived in Granville. He and Anna Porter were married in 1817 in Granville, Washington, New York. He died on 25 June 1874 at age ~80 in Middle Granville, Washington County, New York.
In the 1820 Census, he was living next to Job and had a family of 3 (one child). He died of apoplexy at the age of 80.

A report of his death said he was the youngest son of Job Leonard, an aide to General Gates at the Battle of Bennington (Saratoga). (Whitehall Times) The Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont, edited by H. Carleton, p. 342: "Eli Bennett Stillson, the ledes son of Abel Jr. and Sarah Wetmore Stillson, was born in the homestead before mentioned 13 Apr 1813 and died at Middle Granville, New York 25 Nov 1873. He married Eliza Ann Leonard, the only child of Henry and Anne Porter Leonard, the fathers of both of whom served with distinction in the Revolutionary War. Henry Leonard was the youngest son of Colonel Job Leonard of Norton, MA, one of the staff of General Horatio Gates, and Anne Porter was the eldest daughter of John Porter of Danbury, CT, who was an artificer throughout the war for independence on the staff of General George Washington. To Eli Bennett and Eliza Ann Leonard Stillson were born four children: Henry Leonard Stillson, John Porter Stillson, George Hamilton Gray Stillson, and Anan Francis Stillson."

A note indicates he may have been a member of the family of Timothy Leonard of Granville.
