Robert Bennet came to this continent in 1639. He came to this country under arrangements made by Sir William Coddington. He became Coddington's personal tailor. Newport records include a grant of 10 acres to Robert Bennet, servant of Mr. William Coddington, at "the north end of farm." Robert was a farmer and miller, spending most of his life in Newport, RI. He was made a freeman in 1673.
Robert may have been a relative or close friend of William Coddington. He had some education, unusual for a commoner. He may have been a native of Lincolnshire.
