Earwaker's HIstory of Sandbach described Cotton Township as having been granted to the Cotton family shortly after one Adam Fraser pawned "the whole vill" for eighty marks in silver to Roger de Lacy, constable of Chester (who held office in 1215), who granted it to Judas Kelly, father of one Gilbert de Cotton.
