On November 15, 1702, he was ordained as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Newport, supposedly the first Baptist minister ordained on this continent. He was a deputy to the General Assembly in 1696-98. He was also the fourth minister of the Baptist Church in Swansea.

Elizabeth Clarke, his first wife, was his first cousin. Her first name may have been Susannah. His second wife, Phebe Weeden, daughter of William Weeden, died in 1745.

John Peckham appears in Newport, R.I., in 1638. He probably came over on the Griffin. He was a zealous Baptist and was associated with the Clarkes and others who were among the active supporters of Anne Hutchinson. His lands were allotted with those of William Freeborn, John Coggeshall and others who were the first settlers of the Island of Aquidneck (Rhode Island -- where Newport is now located). He soon bought a tract of land one mile square in Little Compton, on which they built a house in 1640? which stood for 200 years and in which 6 generations of Peckhams were born (the Peckhams are still large landholders in Little Compton -- I went to school with a bunch of them in the 1940's).

John's first wife died sometime before 1648. His second wife was baptised in 1648.

He was one of the original members of the Newport First Baptist Church when it was founded in 1644.
