Back to English RecordsThe Leonards in Sussex, Kent and Surrey
Most of the quoted material is from Brian Awty’s work on ironworking families, Robert Bowman’s work on ironworking families, and other sources. They seek to tie these works to genealogical information. Some are from the UK census rolls starting in 1841 and every ten years thereafter.
What we know and don’t know about the Leonard’s Sussex years.
Brian Awty postulates that the ancestors of James and Henry came from France in the early 1500s, that Martin Leonard aka Martin Quinto aka Martin Le Mowle b. abt. 1524? d. Mar 1592 in Burwash, fyner in Etchingham, Sussex, in 1562, was the progenitor of their branch of Leonards. He had sons John b. 1549 Frant, Henry b. 1561 Etchingham, Jordan, and (undefined) Henry residing in Sheffield 1589-91 fathered Thomas, unnamed in records, b. 1591 Fletching, Sussex. I cannot verify that Henry was residing in Sheffield, Sussex, nor that he had a son born in 1591 in Fletching, Sussex.
Did more than one branch of the “iron” Leonard family migrate from France to Sussex? From the patterns of names used in various probable branches, it would appear they did. Martin, Richard and Lawrence do not appear among the names of descendants of the Thomas who moved to and had children in the west of England in the 1620s and 1630s.
Leonards in particular were itinerants, mostly skilled workmen who moved to where the work was. Smelting furnaces were frequently fired up in the winter, when water for turning the hammer wheels was more plentiful and stores of charcoal, iron ore, and the fluxing agent could be gathered in the warmer months and placed close at hand for a successful run.
Question: did these immigrant ironworking families from France intermarry? Sometimes, an alias seems derived from the mother’s family, sometimes from where the family was from. The names associated with the Leonards in ironworking in Massachusetts in the 1640s include the Russells, the Vintons, the Tylers, the Prays, and the Quintons.
John Vinton, son of John, bap. 9 Apr 1643, Fletching. John m. Anne Halfpenny 28 Apr 1640, Fletching. Also born in Fletching: Mary, Abraham, John, Richard, William. Ann, dau. When is first Vinton recorded in MA?

Leonard Records in Sussex, Kent, and Surrey
The French Leonards first appeared in the southeast of England, centered on Sussex, but also including Kent, Suffolk, and Surrey. For that reason these shires are clustered together.
The following are the parishes where Leonards or relevant others are mentioned in the church records. The problem is usually that there is not enough information to link them beyond one or two generations. Given that the Leonards moved fairly frequently to pursue work at various furnaces and forges, one can’t expect to find two or more generations “stacked up” in the same village and owning the same property.
One hundred seventy-eight water-powered furnace and forge sites from the 1500s to the 1700s have been identified in Sussex and bordering areas.[1] The furnaces and forges most likely to have included Leonards as workmen are named next to the town.
Ashburnham, East Sussex
Elizabeth Lenhard m. Charles Butcher 26 Oct 1774, Ashburnham
Nathaniel Lennard m. Elizabeth Delves, 6 Mar 1747
Elizabeth Lennard m. Thomas Carter, 12 Oct 1754, Catsfield
Hartfield is located about 5 miles NW of Crowbridge. Other nearby towns include Wytheham and Ashdown Forest. Frant is perhaps 10 miles east. Newbridge Furnance and Forge was first built in 1496. The last reference to it was in 1603.
James Leonard was unmarried and a forgeman at the kings works at Newbridge in July 1544. By November 1544 he may have been “Jacobus Leynarde” paying poll tax at Brasted, Kent. He may be the James Lyvarde who paid the poll tax in Foxearle Hundred in 1572. (Awty)
Elizabeth Lenhard m. William Wenham, 13 Apr 1744, Hellingly
Buxted is next to Maresfield, about a mile north of Uckfield, perhaps five miles south of Crowborough. Fletching is close by. Oldlands Furnace was located in Buxted Old Forge Furnace and Forge (Marshall’s) is located in nearby Maresfield. Ralph Hogge, early gun molder, lived nearby in Marshall.

Mayfield Hawkhurst, Kent or East Sussex? Bivelham (aka Bibleham) Mayfield Parish?
Mayfield and Five Ashes Parish is located in East Sussex near Heathfield. Several forges were in the area. Bibleham forge was working from abt. 1550 to after 1778. It was owned by the Pelhams. Nearby Hawksden forge was also located in Mayfield and was owned by the Morleys in the late 1500s.
John Leonarde, fyner, an alien, mentioned as working in the borough of Bevilham in 1549 and 1550, along with John Vinton. He was a servant of Mr. Antonye Pelham in 1549 and 1550. Shoyswell (Bevilham Forge 1550) was a fyner at Hawksden Forge 1549-51 (and later at Rushmonden -- Pelham Furnace?) A follow up would check also for a Rowland Leonard/Peter de Guye at Shoyswell in 1560) (Etchingham Forge? Johann (John)Leonarde and Roulande Leonarde listed in 1560 in the Hundred at Shoyswell. James Lyvarde (Leonard?). John Leonard may have ended his days at either Maresfield or Nutley. James Leonard of Nutley buried at Maresfield in 1612 (no male descendants?) (Awty).
In Mayfield records, there are of the French ironworkers, Tyler, Richard Martyn, Vintayn (Vinton), Russell, Nicholas Pinnyon bap. 12 Aug 1605, Ramsden 1574.
Frant is 3 or 4 miles east of Wadhurst and 10 to 12 miles west of Etchingham and Mayfield.
Brookland forge and Verredge forges were in the Barham family ownership. Operations began abt. 1521 and ceased in the 1630s. Breecher’s forge in 1574, perhaps until the early 1800s. Benhall forge operated by Waller, Leeche, and Foley.
Joan Valliance, dau. of Richard Pray and Margaret Peckham, m. Quinton Pray 15 Jan 1627, Mayfield, Sussex, children born in Frant or Mayfield, Sussex. John Pray, born abt. 1504 Auneuil, Picardie. Quenton was related to Nicholas Pinyon. Children born in Frant, Sussex. Quenton, wife, and children arrived on the Anne Cleve, possibly with his two brothers. Quenton worked first in Kittery, ME, as a fyner, then transferred to Saugus and Braintree in 1647.

Source: Col. Harold Leonard Pray, Pray Family of Braintree, Quincy, and Weymouth. The Prays emigrated with the Leonards to Braintree/Saugus. Quinton Pray ran the hearth at Braintree. Richard was a coaler at Saugus. Richard was fined for swearing, beating his wife, and for contempt of court.
Nicholas Pinyon (Pinion, Pinnion) was baptized 27 Mar 1607 in Warbleton, Sussex and married Elizabeth Starre 1 Oct 1637 in Burwash, Sussex, son of Nicholas Pinyon. (Warning: there are several Nicholas Pinyons baptized about that time in Sussex or Surrey.) Nicholas and his wife, perhaps with family, came on the An Cleve to Massachusetts about 1643. Other members of the Pinyon family remained in England. Nicholas and his wife, Elizabeth, were frequently in trouble with the law and haled before the Essex, MA, court. After the Saugus iron works went bankrupt, they appear to have moved to New Haven, CT. Source: Ancestry.com. Check on Essex Court records.
John Vinton was the ancestor of all persons bearing the name in America. He was born in England and came to America sometime after 1640 and settled at Lynn where he worked at Saugus. He eventually became fyner in charge oy one of the hearths. John Vinton had a son, John, baptized 9 Apr 1643 in Fletching, Sussex, and married Anne Halfpenny. John had additional children between 1648 and 1662 in America: daughters Mary, Eleanor, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, and several more sons: John, William, Blaise, Abraham, and Richard. John eventually moved to the iron works at New Haven, CT., with his son John and several others from Saugus, dying there in 1663. His grandson Thomas was a bloomer and purchased the Braintree iron works in 1720. His great grandson, Thomas, continued the family tradition in iron as a blacksmith.
As with the Pinyons, there were a number of John Vintons residing in Sussex, Kent, and Surrey, as well as Tylers and Russells. The Tylers and Russells appear in Herefordshire or Hertfordshire in the late 1500s, about 50 miles from Pontypool, Monmouthshire. Ralph Russell is said to have come from Pontypool to America in 1643, along with James and Henry Leonard.
Joane, daughter of Richard Russell, bap. 22 Jan 1547, Frant
John Lenard baptized 29 January 1548, Frant, Sussex, fa. Martin. Brother of Henry?

Robert Leonard married Joane Jasp 24 Apr 1620 Wield, Sussex (I can’t find a Weald separate from Burwash Weald.)
Alce (Alice or Elsie?) Leonard chr 1 Nov 1622, Frant, fa. William, a traveler.
Fletching is just a mile or two west of Uckfield, near Maresfield and Buxted, south of Crowborough 6 miles or so. There were several furnaces and forges in the Fletching area, including Sheffield furnace and forge, Fletching forge, and Old Forge furnace and forge. Sheffield furnace and forge were established by 1545. Old Forge may have been involved in gun-founding. Ralph Hogge lived nearby.
Henry Leonard, probably the son of Martin Quinton (Awty), appears in frankpledge at Danehill Sheffield from 1588 to 1591, but not traced to the Weald. Son: Unnamed, but possibly Thomas, baptized in Fletching in 1591. Awty speculates that could be the Thomas who was the father of James and Henry, in which case he would be the Leonard who moved to the west of England.
A number of Vintons were born in Fletching in the 1640s: John, Mary, Anne, Abraham, William, Richard.
Edmund Lennard m. Elizabeth Keieler, Feb 1681, Fletching

Etchingham is located east of Mayfield, Burwash, and Heathfield, but to the west of Hawkhurst. Richard Shoyswell lived here. Etchingham forge here was in operation from before 1540 to after 1724 and was operated by the Pelhams for a while. Hawkhurst forge was probably within walking distance to the west (about 4 miles?).
