Biography
James Leonard was born before 31 December 1786 in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, England. He and
Sarah Scriven were married on 11 October 1811 in Saint Thomas Church, Dudley, Worcestershire, England. He died He died of whooping cough. on 16 July 1864 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Or did he die in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1864. Mother named Prudence Hawker? Was he baptized 30 Mar 1790?
The main Monklands Canal was completed at the end of the 18th Century to transport coal to Glasgow. Blackband iron stone was discovered by David Mushet crossing ghe bed of the Calder near several small villages in the area of what became the Burgh of Coatbridge 5 or 6 miles SE of Glasgow. There were no more than a couple of small forges in the area in 1801 when Mushet set up Calder Ironworks, which later over by Wm. Dixon and Co. of Govan in 1802. They started to become profitable thanks to Napoleon. Monklands Iron Works started in nearby Calderbank in 1805 and where the hot blast process of iron ore smelting invented by James Beaumont Neilson was introduced in 1828. Neilson's process of iron ore smelting made the combination of local ironstone and type of coal more profitable, and several large ironworks were then established in the Coatbridge area. Baird Bros. started Gartsherrie in 1830, Dundyvan started around 1833 (but ceased around 1870; Summerlee was started by Wilson and Co. in 1837; Carnbroe by Merry and Cunningham in 1838; J and J Addy commenced by Langloan in 1841; and there were many smaller works begun. There were 7 blast furnaces in Coatbridge by 1830, rising to 46 by 1840 and 60 by 1850. By 1861 there were at least 8 malleable ironworks and over 160 puddling furnaces in operation. In 1835 Bairds built Coatbridge Inn and adjoining shops, and it was said that the Baird family of Gartsherrie created Coatbridge. Amongst other works Caledonia Tube Works started in 1844; Coats Iron Works started in 1854; Clyde Tube Works in 1863; and the Second North British Ironworks in 1868. There was a depression in the iron trade from 1857 to 1863. The closed topped furnace was first introduced by Mr. Ferrie at Monklands Iron Co. around 1870, making production significantly more efficient. By 1871 the iron industry employed 40% of adult men in Scotlland. Coats Iron and Steel Co. formed in 1884. In 1885 there were 33 blast furnaces at four of the ironworks. (Summerlee, Carnbroe, Langloan, and Gartsherrie.) In 1888 Monklands Iron Co. was replaced by Calderbank. Many ironworks in Britain were sold or closed i the late 1870's due to collapse in iron prices. The population of Old Monkland Parish increased from around 4,000 in 1801 to 25,000 in 1851 and doubled again by 1901.
The new techniques introduced into Scotland in the 1840's meant that Scottish ironmasters recruited experienced puddlers, shinglers, and rollers from the established ironworking areas of England and Wales. These skilled workers were well paid and frequently earned sufficient to fund the start-up of their own malleable works that were much less expensive to build compared with blast furnaces. Outstand among iron workers who graduated to brcome Iron Masters were Thomas Ellis and the Leonard family,"
George Thomson, The Iron Industry of thr Monklands, Scottish Industrial History, 1982.
James and Sarah had at least 10 children. They may have been married at a Methodist chapel in Brierley Hill. They moved to Scotland in the 1840's.
