John Leonard

This family supposedly came from three brothers from France about the time of Charles IV, shortly after the St. Bartholomew massacre of French Protestants. (16th Century). One of the brothers was a baronet and 2nd heir to the French crown, but his taking part with the Protestants caused him and his two brothers to be sentenced to death. They were supposedly condemned to death, but were spared through the intervention of a beautiful young lady with the King. The King banished the three brothers, and they went to England at Hull, one remaining at or near Willerby. The other two separated, one going north, the other south.
The source of this information is a Mr. J. Leonard of Haverfield by Mr. J. H. Leonard in 1879.
