Biography

Col. Ebenezer Learned (Leonard) was born on 31 August 1690 in Franmingham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He and Deborah Haynes were married on 14 October 1714 in Framingham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He died on 15 March 1772 at age 81 in Oxford, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
Ebenezer Learned was born August 31, 1690. (County records say Sept. 1.) He married Deborah Haynes of Sudbury on Oct. 14,1714. She was a sister to Josiah Haynes, octogenarian, killed at the battle of Concord, April 19, 1775. Ebenezer was one of the first settlers of Oxford with his brother, Isaac and his daughter, Dorothy was the first child born there. He built a large house in north Oxford that was still standing in 1875. He and his wife lived and died in the residence as well as three successive generations of descendants. Ebenezer was a town officer and justice of the peace in 1712. In 1751 he is named as Col. Ebenezer Learned as is his gravestone. He was the largest landholder in Oxford and his homestead alone was estimated to contain 1000 acres. He built a dam and sawmill on his estate previous to 1728. In his will, he gave the homestead farm to his youngest child, Jeremiah on the condition that he maintain his mother, and "my black man, Mingo, to wait upon her, during their natural lives." His wife was known as "Madame Learned, and tradition speaks of her as a woman of unusual ability. Ebenezer's son, Ebenezer Learned Jr. was first commissioned a Colonel in 1775, and served at Lexington, Concord, Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. With Ebenezer Learned Jr.'s help, an informal agreement was reached with the British that American troops would allow them to evacuate Boston with the promise that the city would not be destroyed by the British. His work created an unofficial plan for the evacuation of the British on March 17, 1776. Learned was given the honor to unbar the gates of Boston which admitted Washington's army into the city. In April, 1777 he was made a Brigadier-General serving under his personal friend, George Washington. Learned commanded his own Continental Brigade in the Battle of Saratoga. Major General Benedict Arnold without authority assumed command of Learned’s Brigade in the second Battle of Saratoga. There is a modern day monument erected for the accomplishments of "Learned's Brigade" located near National Memorial Arch on the right of Outer Line Drive in Valley Forge PA. Ebenezer Learned Jr. returned to Massachusetts and served in its legislature in 1783. Another child of Ebenezer Learned Sr. was Dorothy who married Elijah Moore. Together they had a child, Martha Moore who is the subject of a Pulitzer Prize winning book by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich and a movie called A Midwife’s Tale which was based on Martha Ballard's dairy entries. Another descendant of Ebenezer Learned Sr. is his g-g-granddaughter, Clara Barton who was the founder of the Red Cross.
