He was a graduate of Yale, 1824. He was a member of the Renssalaer County Medical Society and its President, 1846-7. He was a professor of botany and zoology at the Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute 1845-48 and a trustee 1866-89.
In the 1850 Census, the family was living in Lansingburgh. Frederick was listed as a gentleman with land worth $25,000. Frederick Baldwin Leonard was baptized on 8 February 1807 at Christ Church in Poughkeepsie, New York.
