Joseph Leonard was born on 21 July 1818 in Fayette County, Indiana. He and
Sophronia Lyon were married on 27 August 1840 in Springville, Indiana. They had 7 children, 3 of whom predeceased them. He died on 8 July 1907 at age 88 in Jackson Township, Orange (or Greene) County, Indiana.
He was one of the pioneers of Greene Co., IN. When he emigrated to Indiana, he walked all the way, carrying his belongings tied up in a handkerchief, following a wagon across the mountains. He left the wagon and his friend at what is now Indianapolis, walking from there to Sprinville in a single day, arriving at his destination by moonlight.
