When his father, Jacob, died in 1790, Jacob chose his uncle, Samuel Leonard, as guardian.
In 1811, Jacob W. Leonard (presumably this Jacob) first served in the NC House of Commons and was a state senator in 1814-15, 1817-18, and 1821. He appears on the rolls of the House of Commons again 1824-25. In 1826-27, Jacob Leonard, Jr. appears in the NC House of Commons and was a state senator 1828-29. (Source: Sally Toomey)
He apparently inherited the home after the death of Thomas Leonard (Leonard-Rupe-Stephenson genealogy).

According to his death record, he died of consumption (tuberculosis). His wife died of cancer. His wife's obituary mentions that they moved to Batavia in 1839. They had a total of 15 children, of which 13 were still alive at Mary's death.
According to Badger's Leonard Dictionary, an Alonzo E. Leonard, son of J. Leonard, married and had Olive Amelia, who married Charles W. Dibble at Batavia, NY. And an Alonzo N. Leonard, son of J. Leonard died in Batavia 20 Nov 1847 (Ref. Genessee County Record). These may be other Alonzo Leonards, leading to possible confusion over children and grandchildren.
