 An odd trait of that part of the family exhibited by both Kirke and his sister Judy was that they were not the least bit interested in correspondence.  They would love to get my letters, but would warn me that I should not expect a reply.  They much preferred a good conversation, either in person or by telephone.  On the other hand my side appears to love to write.  They come from the Henry Parker Leonard brother and my side comes from James Milton Leonard.  They were known in the village by their initials, H.P. and J.M., rather than by name.  These two brothers’ mother died and their father remarried.  Their step mother didn’t have any love for the widow’s offspring and consequently she would not let them live in the house so they slept in the barn.  As soon as they were able they found jobs and went off on their own.  J.M., my great grand-father, went to sea in merchant sailing vessels where, over time, he became a first mate.  Later he married and left that life to make his fortune on shore in Osterville.  His brother, H.P., made a good living building great houses for the wealthy that wanted summer homes in a part of Osterville known as Wianno.  H. P. had a son, Parker, and daughter Imogene.  The daughter committed suicide in her early twenties, but Parker went on to live a privileged and somewhat adventuress life.  During WW II he designed and built training gliders for the US Navy.  His son Parker had two children, Kirke and Judy.  Judy married Paul MacCready.  Paul has done a couple of TED talks (http://www.ted.com/talks/paul_maccready_flies_on_solar_wings)  Kirke did much of the construction on Paul’s human powered aircraft, but also worked for an aerospace company on the west coast.  He worked on the propulsion units for the Apollo moon landers without knowing that his cousin, Willis Leonard, was working on the LEM for Gruman Aircraft on Long Island, NY.
