Biography

John Howland was born in 1602 in Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England. He and Elizabeth Tilley were married on 25 March 1623 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He died on 23 February 1673 at age ~71 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was buried on 25 February 1673 at Burial Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
John Howland came over on the Mayflower as a servant or attendant to Governor Carver. Governor Carver and his wife both died in the first season after arrival. He was an assistant to the Governor 1633-35, afterwards a representative. He died in 1673 at age 80. See George Ernest Bowman's articles in The Mayflower Descendant, Vol. XVII, Howland Notes. His wife, Elizabeth Tilley, also came over on the Mayflower. He had an exciting experience on the way over, described by Governor Bradford in his history of Plymouth Colony. He fell overboard, grabbed one of the topsail halyards (ropes), held on, though under water, and was eventually hauled back aboard the Mayflower.

He was one of the party of ten that was sent ashore December 8, 1620, to explore the country and select a place for landing. He held several offices in he Colony, being Assistant 1633-35. He was Depty eleven years, between 1652 and 1676. John Howland had person sources.1
