Sir Richard Cotton was born about 1539. He and
Mary Mainwaring were married on 6 January 1560 in Marbury, Cheshire, England. He and
Jane Seyliard were married on 14 June 1578 in Saint Olave, Jewry, London, England. He died on 14 June 1602 at age ~63 in Stoke, Warwickshire, England.
In 1563 he built the Combermere manor house, which incorporated the remains of the abbey there. According to dthe Court Rolls of Cmbermere, a joint manor court was held there by Richard Cotton, armiger, seneschel of the manor. The manor of Newhall was vested in Sir Richard Cotton for two portions and in the Fitzwarings for one portion.
Sir Richard apparently lived in Stoke, just north of the City of Coventry, for the last few years before his death in 1602 (Boyer, p. 72).

He served as Sheriff of Denbighshire and was esquire to the body of King Henry VIII. He was knighted by the latter in or before 1542. He was given a new grant to Combermere by Henry VIII 3 February 1541/2, obtaining the site and demesne of the Abbey and two-thirds of Newhall Manor.
