Biography

Hon., Rev. Elijah Leonard, was born on 1 May 1787 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Mary ("Polly") Stone were married on 31 October 1811 in Vermont. He died on 15 May 1856 at age 69 in London, Ontario, Canada.
He ran away from home before completing his apprenticeship and left the Taunton area, migrated across Vermont, and settled near Lake George where he engaged in the production of iron. He lived in Syracuse and had a farm, but did not enjoy farming. He later moved to a place north of Syracuse (near Taberg, NY?), where he had a small furnace and engaged in the production of iron. In 1829 he took a trip to Albany on cousin Draper's canal boat. He and Lewis came to Long Point, Norfolk, Ontario in 1829 where Elijah became the new superintendent of the Normandale, Ontario, Forge. In 1834 he established a foundry in St. Thomas, Ontario, and moved it to London, Ontario, in 1838. He was called to the Canadian Senate about 1842. (from Eric Bowler and from ECL-GML manuscript).
