Biography

Capt., Deacon Lemuel L. Leonard, was born on 19 November 1782 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Olive Lee were married on 30 November 1803 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 30 September 1869 at age 86 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1
In the 1850 Census, he is living with his family in Taunton, a farmer with land worth $2400. His son, Henry G., and his wife and son Henry are living with them. Another son, Nathaniel Bradford, is living next door with his family.

In his early years, he was engaged in the manufacture of mustard. In 1845, he built a small foundry below Whittenton Mills for casting stoves and small wares. A few years later his son, Lemuel M. Leonard, was associated with him and enlarged the foundry. Lemuel M. Leonard built a large foundry on Wales street and removed from Whittenton in 1865, continuing the business until his death in 1876. In 1877, the Leonard Co-operative Foundry Company was organized in 1877 and reorganized in 1891 under the name of the New England Stove Company.

He was commissioned captain of a cavalry company, but had no wartime service. He was a member of the legislature for one term. He was chosen a deacon of the 1st Congregational Church.

Leonard book has Geporge Washington Leonard Burt as a son of Lemuel,
which he was not. This is an error. Capt., Deacon Lemuel L. Leonard, had person sources.2
