Per Joensson ("Per Näbb") Gyllensvärd
M, #31509, b. about 1595, d. 1664
Biography
Per Joensson ("Per Näbb") Gyllensvärd was born about 1595 in Sunnerbo, Smaland, Sweden. His father was "of landsfogdeslakt." In 1607 he entered military service, and by 1618 he was an ensign. He advanced in rank to "highest lieutenant." He served in the Thirty Years War 1618-1648, among others, the battles at Breitenfeld, Lutzen, and Oldenburg. In 1632, he was ennobled at the battle of Nurnberg and became Per Joensson Gyllensvard till Onnarp.
In 1626 he purchased Onnarp Skattegard. He died in 1664 at age ~69.
He was the son of a poor shoemaker from Vaster Gotland. He signed up as a calvary soldier from Nabbarp in Kolaby parish under the name, "Per Nabb." One day, he saved his King's life. The King ennobled him: "in the past you were called Per Nabb; now you shall be called "Goldensword (Gyllensvard)."
That's the folktale. In reality, he was Per Joensson born in Sunnerbo, Smaaland toward the end of the 1500's. In 1607 he was called to military service and by 1618 was promoted to ensign. He continued to be promoted and in 1633 was named overlieutenant. He fought in the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648), in particular, Breitenfeld, Lutzen, and Oldendorf. He was raised to the nobility after the battle at Nurnberg in 1632 as Gyllensvard of Onnarp. Per Joensson married Elizabeth Hand, daughter of Hakan Knutson Hand and Virginia Eriksdotter. Virginia Eriksdotter was the daughter of King Erik XIV and his "illegitimate wife," Agda Pehrsdotter."
