Biography

Robert Treat Paine was born on 12 March 1731 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He and Sarah ("Sally") Cobb were married on 15 March 1770 in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He died on 11 May 1814 at age 83 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
ECL: He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was a lawyer, Harvard 1749.

They had 8 children, four sons and four daughters. He grew to notoriety by opposing the Stamp Act in the 1760's and later prosecuting Capt. Thomas Preston and his men for firing on the inhabitants of the Boston 5 March 1770 (The Boston Massacre). John Adams was their defense attorney. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1774 and thereafter until 1778, when he became the Massachusetts Attorney General. He was Chairman of the Cannon Committee of the Continental Congress, indicating a likely background in iron refining. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, signing just below John Hancock. Robert Treat Paine had person sources.1
