He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1774 and thereafter until 1778, when he became the Massachusetts Attorney General. He was Chairman of the Cannon Committee of the Continental Congress, indicating a likely background in iron refining. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, signing just below John Hancock. Robert Treat Paine had person sources.
