William Baulston
M, #21296, b. 1600, d. after 11 March 1678
Biography
William Baulston was born in 1600 in England. He and
Elizabeth Potter were married MAYBE 1626. He died after 11 March 1678 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.
According to Boyer, Ancestral Lines, p. 75, he came to America with the Winthrop fleet in 1630. He became a freeman in Boston May 18, 1631. He was a sergeant in the militia in 1634 and licensed to keep a house of entertainment and sell claret and white wine in 1637.
"He was elected a Selectman of Boston for four terms of six months each beginning on 14 March 1635/6 through 16 October 1637. However, having been a supporter of Mrs. Anne Hutchinson and Mr. Wheelwright, he was "disenfranchised, fine 20 pounds, & discharged from bearing any public office" in Boston 2 November 1637 and signed the Compact at Portsmouth, RI, 7 March 1638. However, his service as Boston Selectman did continue until 2 April 1638. On 2 May of that year he was fined 20 shillings for selling beer at two pence a quart on on 20 May he was granted six acres and a license for a "house of entertainment for strangers..." He was granted a six acre house lot in Portsmouth on 10 June 1638 and 240 acres on 10 February 1639/40, as well as other grants. His homestead and public house were located at the head of the town pond...
In 1640 and 1641 he was treasurer for Portsmouth and Newport, and in the years 1641 to 1644, 1648, and 1657 to 1673 he was Assistant....
Perhaps some words of the significance of this record would be helpful to the casual reader... ...It took great courage to join the small number who were eventually exiled to what is now Rhode Island. When he was treasurer of Portsmouth and Newport he was in fact holding that office for the entire "colony," which was actually an independent, if unrecognized, republic, which later included Providence and Warwick and did not achieve colonial status until 1647. An assistant held a higher rank than deputy or commissioner, which were members of the lower house of the legislature, called the General Assembly or the General Court at various times. The present equivalent of an assistant would be a state senator. Thus from 1641 to 1673 he served as a legislator in twenty-four of the thirty-three years. In addition, when the government of the reputlic, later the colony, of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations met generally only four times a year in various towns (sometimes in people's homes), the de factor capitol was at times William Baulstone's tavern." Boyer, p. 75.
See also The Winthrop Fleet, pp. 97-102. William Baulston was an Innkeeeper. Immigrated: in 1630.
