Stukely Westcott
M, #12966, b. 1592, d. 12 January 1677
Parents
Biography
Stukely Westcott was born in 1592. He and
Rosanna Hill were married about 1617. He died on 12 January 1677 at age ~85 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.
The Westcott genealogy indicates that Stukely can be traced back to minor nobility in the Yeovil section of England.
He came on a ship from Dartmouth, Devon, on 1 May 1635, along with his wife and six children. The William Arnold family was on board the same ship. They arrived in New England on June 24, 1635. The family initially settled at Naumkeag, later known as Salem, MA. He was a warm and close friend of Roger Williams, who was banished from Salem in 1636. The Westcotts, Throckmortons, Olneys, and several others were ordered to leave Salem in 1638. They made their way to Providence, where they joined the Arnolds, Carpenters, John Greene, Thomas James, Robert Coles, William Harris, Richard Waterman, and others. Westcott was later one of the original members of the First Baptist Church of Providence.
Westcott was allied with Samuel Gorton in the various troubles with Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth Colonies, as well as with Connecticut. The Westcotts moved to Warwick Neck and settled there.
A Stukely Westcott took refuge at Caleb Arnold's house when driven from Warwick by the Indians in King Philip's War.
Was his wife Rosanna Hill or Juliana Marchant? Stukely Westcott had person sources.
